Rebooting Your Career Development

Go to college. Get a job. It’s that easy, right?

If things ever were that simple, those days have long since passed. Today, companies expect their employees to possess more than a college degree and a strong will to work — they want their IT pros to be informed about industry trends, confident about their career paths and in command of a wide range of technical and business skills. If you’re afraid you fall short of meeting these requirements, fear not. You’re not alone. According to a recent CareerBuilder.com survey, 46 percent of IT hiring managers say they have difficulty finding qualified workers. Write Code Once For Both Mobile And Desktop Apps

For the last several years, while developers were building Microsoft .NET Framework client applications for Windows, many had no idea that they could also have been creating applications for Windows Mobile using the same skills and toolsets. But Windows Mobile wasn’t as widespread in the enterprise then, so the need to write custom applications targeting mobile devices was not as great. Today, there’s a huge demand and many desktop developers are getting their feet wet with mobile development. Unfortunately, many miss the opportunity to share their .NET code cross-platform even though it is relatively easy to do so.

Women of Tech: Hear Us Roar, A Special Series

There's no doubt that women coders, developers, designers,
and programmers are a powerful force in the modern tech industry, despite
their smaller numbers compared to men. At the same time many of the major
impacts and innovations of women at every level of the development and
evolution of technology--from the first female coders to today's Web 2.0
pioneers--aren't all that well known.

But starting now, O'Reilly Media aims to celebrate and give voice to the
real-world experiences and concerns of these female trailblazers by
publishing a new online series, "Women in Tech." The brainchild of Tatiana
Apandi, an associate editor at O'Reilly, the series features articles
solicited from technology's female side--and all focused on what it's like
to carve out a career in technology.

Join the fun at Women in Tech.
