Microsoft issues patch for Vista OS build

I couldn't believe my eyes when I found an article stating that MS has issued a patch for an operating system still under development. -Trip

Microsoft Corp. has issued a patch for a preliminary version of its Vista OS for the same graphics-rendering problem that raised concerns about current versions of the Windows OS earlier this month. The patch applies to a Community Technology Preview (CTP) of Vista released in December, a version available to Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Universal subscribers and beta testers, according to Microsoft's Web site. Vista isn't due for a general release to the public until later this year.

Cisco Unveils Rich Media Communications Specialist Cert

Cisco Systems released a new certification last week that will help ensure more individuals possess the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out premium audio, video and Web conferences. The Cisco Rich Media Specialist credential will evaluate candidates’ capabilities with the company’s products in this area and also imbue them with a general sense of concepts involved with Web and video conferencing, said Don Field, Cisco’s senior manager of certifications. “In practice, as with anyone who earns any certification, what someone will encounter on the job may include technologies that aren’t covered in a particular certification,” he said. “We’ve picked areas where the individual is demonstrating specific competency with certain Cisco products and technologies but is also likely to be demonstrating a general competency in this area, so that if they encounter a technology they’re not familiar...

Automating Windows with Autohotkey

If you want to automate some repetitive tasks or write a simple utility that makes your daily computing easier, it's not very practical to learn a full-blown programming language. Instead, you'd be better off using a scripting tool like Autohotkey that allows you to automate virtually any task on Windows. Autohotkey features an easy-to-learn scripting language that allows you to create useful scripts in a matter of minutes. The scripting language contains functions that allow you to create graphical interfaces, effectively turning your scripts into mini applications. Better yet, with the Smart GUI tool, you can build graphical interfaces without writing any code at all.

Snooping fears plague new iTunes

Apple's Steve Jobs has come under fire over the iTunes changes
Apple has been criticised over a new version of its iTunes program that can keep track of a user's listening habits.

The updated software includes a feature that recommends tracks similar to the music being played via iTunes.

Users said Apple had to be more open about data being collected because the recommendations use unique identifiers for a computer and iTunes account.

Apple said it did not keep any data gathered after it made recommendations.

Tips for Online Job Hunting

Members post questions all the time asking for job hunting advice. This article comes at the right time. -Trip

For Susan Joyce, webmaster of Job-Hunt.org, helping people find work is more than just a professional duty—it’s a personal mission. Joyce, along with several thousand of her co-workers, was laid off in the mid-1990s by a large computer company that ultimately went under. Many of her former colleagues went through some serious trials afterward, even going to extremes like suicide. “I saw some terrible things as a consequence of the layoffs,” she said. “It made a big impression on me.”

The Five Security 'Musts' You Can't Ignore

Last month I told you about some myths that have grown up around security, but that are not necessarily things you should believe. This month it's time for things you really do need to believe in and act upon if you're to stay out of trouble. Instead of myths, they're the "musts": security actions you must take regardless of the size of your enterprise or your network. But be forewarned, this is not a complete list. These are just the first things you must do. There are plenty of others that depend on your specific needs and infrastructure requirements. But if you start here, you'll be on your way to having a secure environment, whether you're on a single computer tied to a DSL line or running an enterprise with thousands of users.

Play the Certification Game to Win

Certification – it's expensive, and it's hard work. So is it worth it, to get a few letters after your name? That's the $64,000 question. The first thing to think about is what a certification like Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) actually means. It shows prospective employers that you know certain things, but plenty of networking professionals also know those things without necessarily having a certification to prove it. So, particularly with the lower-level certifications, an employer may be less impressed with the certification than with a few years' experience. A common mistake among IT rookies is the assumption that a low-level certification will open the door to IT jobs. It doesn't.
