Yahoo Closes Chat Rooms to Anyone Under 18

New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning today announced an agreement that will help prevent children from getting involved in dangerous chat room activities over the internet. Under the agreement, one of the nation’s leading internet service providers, Yahoo!, has removed and barred the posting of user-created chat rooms with names that promoted sex between minors and adults. The agreement is the first to institute system-wide controls over categories of chat rooms that are likely to be frequented by child predators. "We need to be vigilant to protect our children," Spitzer said. "It is imperative that parents, industry, prosecutors and lawmakers all work together to identify and address possible threats, and that we teach our children to protect themselves from those who would do them harm." Attorney General Bruning said: "Millions of people use the internet every...

Microsoft and Yahoo link IM arms

Microsoft and Yahoo have agreed to make their instant messaging products compatible. It will mean users of either service will be able to exchange messages by the end of the year and, at a later date soon to be announced, make VoIP phone calls. The IM market has been dominated by three main players - Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL - but all have gone out of their way not to work with the others in a grab for market share. Analysts have long predicted it was only a matter of time before the companies saw the financial sense in allowing their customers to communicate with one another.

Wireless Security – Defining Keywords and Assessing the Threats

Wireless networks can offer convenience but could become a security nightmare if not used appropriately. In the future, advanced security measures might be applied to wireless networks to make a certain network more secure; however, this is not yet the case. Security of a LAN is often dictated by the physical properties of the medium it uses for communication, the methods used to transmit the data, the protocols that control the security of the transmitted data, and the policies that a certain LAN enforces to ensure authorized use. Wireless LANs use airwaves to transmit data, and are considered inherently insecure because the data transmitted are not physically bound like their counterpart, the wired LAN. To secure a wireless LAN, both operational and data security must be enforced. The security issues of wireless LANs are similar to those of the wired LAN.

More than two dozen leading wireless LAN companies have formed an industry coalition to create and submit a spec for the IEEE's next generation wireless LAN standard - 802.11n. W32/Sober.r Threat Rating is Raised

McAfee today announced that its Anti-virus and Vulnerability Emergency Response Team (AVERT) raised its risk assessment to "Medium" on the recently discovered W32/Sober.r, also known as Sober.r. Sober.r is a fast-moving worm that spreads via e-mail, sending itself to addresses found on the victim's machine. The worm arrives as a ZIP file that contains an executable file inside, named "PW_Klass.Pic.packed-bitmap.exe." And it has many of the same functionalities as its Sober predecessors, researchers at McAfee's AVERT said. Users would need to manually extract the executable from the ZIP file and manually run the attachment in order to be infected.
