A preview of the third service pack for Windows XP has appeared on the Net, despite a continued refusal from Microsoft to admit it exists. An "unofficial" preview pack of SP3 is available at The Hotfix, a software download site and discussion forum that focuses on patches and software updates. Ethan Allen, the creator and administrator of The Hotfix, said Wednesday he put together the preview pack from software updates he received from an internal Microsoft source that are expected to be released in SP3.

When to leave your first job in the technology field

When to leave your first job in the technology field
It was early May of 2004, and I was almost at the finish line for my degree. Between me and graduation: Just two summer classes. I was in the process of finishing what could only be described as the most intense spring semester of my college career. As the semester's end finally hit, I realized something. I was going to need a job, and I hadnt even started looking.
Then, almost on cue, the phone rang. The president of a small and local software company was looking for computer engineers with .NET experience. They searched my university's resume database for candidates, and I came up. Would I like an interview? Hell yes.

Critical Shortage of Linux Talent Slowing Adoption
Critical Shortage of Linux Talent Slowing Adoption" />Critical Shortage of Linux Talent Slowing Adoption
Disheartening as it seems, corporations, governments, start-ups and small businesses have difficulty recruiting and retaining talented Linux IT workers. That has become a familiar refrain whenever Linux fails the adoption test in many places across the globe. Some Linux luminaries have suggested implementing in-house training for existing staff. Unfortunately, curriculum and trainers seem in short supply. Another aspect of this problem relates to cost. Those willing to provide training under price their services and wind up losing the respect and trust of decision makers.
The Problem?
Most human resource people believe Linux is an air conditioner company. They get confused between the term Linux and Lennox. So, HR recruiters define their job profiles like this:
Linux programmer needed by enterprise. Skills required:
REFRIGERANT METERING DEVICE CALIBRATION

Third Windows XP service pack due next year
Third Windows XP service pack due next year" />Third Windows XP service pack due next year
There will be a third service pack for Windows XP, due some time in the next year, according to a report by ZDNet. Microsoft France's technical and security director Bernard Ourghanlian was quoted as saying, bluntly: "There will be a Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP." However, there is confusion over when exactly. Some say SP3 won't arrive until after the launch of Vista, which remains Microsoft's priority. Other reports suggest that the origin of the story was Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer, who reportedly said at Surfa Lugnt - Swedish National Data Security Day - that SP3 could ship ahead of Vista.

CompTIA Sets New Date for Convergence+ SMEs

CompTIA Sets New Date for Convergence+ SMEs
CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, has rescheduled its job-task analysis meeting for the development of its new Convergence+ certification. The assembly will take place on Oct. 27 and 28 to better accommodate the schedules of participants, said Mike Johnson, product manager of CompTIAs Network+ and Convergence+ certifications. The original dates were set based on conversations with our Cornerstone committee in a rough outline for the development process for the full certification, he said. Theyre eager to get started, so we wanted to set a date right away to hold this job-task analysis meeting. To have a better cross-section of industry experts, it worked better to have it in October rather that September.

A new Trojan horse exploits an unpatched flaw in Microsoft Office and could let an attacker commandeer vulnerable computers, security experts have warned.

Political hackers deface Novell SUSE sites
Three Novell OpenSUSE community web site were defaced on Sunday by politically motivated hackers. Defacement archive Zone-H reports that a group called IHS Iran Hackers Sabotage broke into OpenSUSE.org, wiki.novell.com and forge.novell.com to post a message stating that it was Iran's right to develop nuclear power. All three sites were defaced in the same way. OpenSUSE.org and forge.novell.com have since been restored to normal operation and the offending images removed. The wiki.novell.com site has been taken temporarily offline. Although somewhat embarrassing all early indications are that the attack was not serious.
