So...You are an IT Pro and You Have Been Laid Off

First there is shellshock. Then there is anger. Then there are tears. Then there is panic. I’ve probably mixed up those emotions. They all get jumbled up, anyway. Many of us have been there. The point is—now what? In my opinion, from a “next step” career planning perspective, you need to get into high-gear with regard to your people networking. You know the old saw “it’s not so much what you know, but who you know?” Well, its gospel truth, believe it. If you are not yet up to speed on social networking, then you have some homework to do. Get over your fear, loathing, and/or paranoia with regard to the online privacy implications of Web sites like LinkedIn and Facebook; you are gonna need to stretch your boudaries with this sort of stuff if you are to secure your next paid gig post-haste.

The qualification will set an international standard for IT professionals in understanding energy efficiency irrespective of what discipline they practice within the industry. It will take the form of a one hour examination following a three-day practitioner course based on understanding and implementing the EU code of conduct for data centre operators.

£18bn Government IT scandal - 3 pages in The Times today

On its front page today - and in a two-page spread inside - The Times has published a joint Times and Computer Weekly investigation on government IT including an opinion piece from us.

The articles refer to IT-based projects, programmes and contracts which have exceeded the original announced costs by more than £18bn.

MPs are fed up with failures of some large government IT-based projects and programmes - as are the government IT professionals, civil and public servants, and contractors who are achieving success on very limited budgets and find their work is overshadowed by the project Chimeras which have unrealistic time-frames and budgets.

The opinion and the...

Snow shows strengths and risks of remote working

With many employees still unable to get to work today, questions are being asked as to what effect it will have on British business?

With meetings cancelled and employees trying to access corporate networks from their own home, the damage could be high, warned some IT suppliers.

Security firm Symantec said, "With the biggest snowfall for 18 years hitting the UK today, many businesses have been forced to employ full remote working practices. Introduction to AJAX Technologies

Introduction to AJAX Technologies

A book excerpt from ASP.NET 3.5 AJAX Unleashed.

If you’ve purchased this book, you probably are interested in AJAX technologies. If you are not familiar with the technology or are new to AJAX, it is important that you take some time and understand where AJAX fits into the big picture of web development. This section helps bring you up to speed with AJAX’s place in your web development toolbox. One problem with the design of web pages (especially ASP.NET web pages) is that to refresh the data on the page, it must postback to the server. This causes the page to flicker while the page is posting, and then the page is reloaded in the browser with the results of the post. You can view the amount of data with tools such as IEHTTPHeaders and HTTPWatch. You will quickly notice that the amount of information getting posted is quite sizeable...
