Xbox will host BT's TV service
BT is teaming up with Microsoft to offer its television service via the software giant's Xbox 360 console.
On-demand films and sports content from the BT Vision service will be available via the Xbox games console from the middle of this year.
Unlike the dedicated set-top box the Xbox will not be able to receive or record live TV.
To get the service, customers will have to first subscribe to BT broadband.

Intel 'undermined' laptop project

Intel 'undermined' laptop project
Intel repeatedly undermined a not-for profit scheme to bring cheap laptops to children in the developing world, the head of the charity has told BBC News.
Nicholas Negroponte accused Intel, which makes a rival PC, of underhand sales tactics and trying to block contracts to buy his machines.
The groups united in July 2007 after a series of rows but split last week.
The head of Intel Paul Otellini said an accusation that the firm had failed to deliver on promises was "hogwash".

Young IT workers disillusioned, hard to hold, survey says

Young IT workers disillusioned, hard to hold, survey says
Young IT employees pose a challenge to many managers who say the Millennial generation holds employers up to unrealistic expectations and makes unreasonable demands for their services.
"The issue managers are facing is with retention, not hiring. That means the work environment is not living up to the employee's expectation," he says. For instance, many younger workers expect to get an office immediately or be paid at a rate higher than entry level.

Why I run an open Wi-Fi network

Why I run an open Wi-Fi network
Security expert Bruce Schneier wrote a column yesterday titled Steal This Wi-Fi explaining why he runs an open wireless network at home:
To me, its basic politeness. Providing internet access to guests is kind of like providing heat and electricity, or a hot cup of tea. But to some observers, its both wrong and dangerous.
Im told that uninvited strangers may sit in their cars in front of my house, and use my network to send spam, eavesdrop on my passwords, and upload and download everything from pirated movies to child pornography. As a result, I risk all sorts of bad things happening to me, from seeing my IP address blacklisted to having the police crash through my door.

As a result, I risk all sorts of bad things happening to me, from seeing my IP address blacklisted to having the police crash through my door.
Schneier concedes that, technically, these sort of calamities are possible, but he discounts the likelihood. I, too, run an open wireless network, but my reasons for sharing the bandwidth are a little...
Spoofing warning for Firefox

Spoofing warning for Firefox
Users of Mozilla Firefox are vulnerable to phishing attacks because the pop-up dialogue box for password entry in the latest version of the web browser can be spoofed, a leading security researcher has warned.
Aviv Raff claims a vulnerability in the way that Firefox displays authentication dialogs allows cyber criminals to obtain username and password information by deceiving users into thinking they are giving their details to a reliable source.

Wikia Search Launches With Google in Its Sight

Wikia Search Launches With Google in Its Sight
Declaring that Internet search is currently broken, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales is trying to fix it. And he wants your help. After several months of development and acquisitions to assemble the infrastructure needed to build a viable search engine, Wikia Search service goes live today. Wikia Search is a product of Wikia Inc., a for-profit company wholly separate from the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that was founded in 2004 and oversees Wikipedia. Following a brief period of private alpha testing, today's unveiling is billed as a "public alpha release." Wales has freely admitted that today's launch is something of a test drive, and that the application will continue to see substantial modifications and updates.
Will Wales do for search what he did for wikis? Find out at InternetNews.com.
'First' iPhone Trojan rolls into town

'First' iPhone Trojan rolls into town
Hackers have created Trojan horse malware targeted at Apple's much-hyped iPhone device.
The package - more of a prank than a threat - poses as an "important system" upgrade supposedly needed prior to upgrading to version 1.1.3 of Apple's firmware. The "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep" seems to lack malicious purpose. Problems kick in when users try to uninstall the package.

Gates on Microsoft's expansion

Gates on Microsoft's expansion
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates made the case Sunday night that its technologies are becoming even more flexible and powerful as they seep into automobiles, Internet-based TV networks and living rooms. A few months away from leaving his daily duties at Microsoft to focus on his philanthropy, Gates used his traditional kickoff keynote at the International Consumer Electronics Show to highlight how Microsoft is extending the reach of its software beyond desktops and servers, and incorporating alternative inputs like voice and touch. "The first digital decade has been a great success," he said. "This is just the beginning. There's nothing holding us back from going much faster and much further in the second digital decade."

Virus could hit WLANs

Virus could hit WLANs
Criminals could hit thousands of Wi-Fi networks through unsecured routers according to researchers at Indiana University. The researchers estimate that a Wi-Fi attack could take over 20,000 wireless routers in New York City within a two-week period, with most of the infections occurring within the first day. "The issue is that most of these routers are installed out of the box very insecurely," said Steven Myers, an assistant professor at Indiana University, who published the paper in November, along with researchers from the Institute for Scientific Interchange in Turin, Italy...
