Apple struggles to fix critical glitch

Apple struggles to fix critical glitch
Serious flaws in Mac OS X and QuickTime software could put Macintosh and Windows systems at risk of cyber attack, Apple has warned.
In a pair of security alerts released on Thursday, Apple outlined 31 flaws that affect various versions of the operating system and a dozen vulnerabilities in its QuickTime media player software. Security experts have deemed the issues "critical" but Apple does not provide a severity rating. Fixes are available.
The Mac OS X vulnerabilities lie in various components of the operating system and affect both the server and client versions, Apple said in an advisory. An attack could be launched using some of the bugs by creating a malformed file, or by building a malicious website and enticing someone to visit it, the company said.....

Prepare for 3-way battle as Yahoo shuns Microsoft

Prepare for 3-way battle as Yahoo shuns Microsoft
Now that Yahoo CEO Terry Semel has put paid to the rumours that Microsoft was looking to acquire its search business, three things are clear. One is that Microsoft felt a need to ramp up its search business fast. Secondly, the next couple of years are going to bear witness to a three-way battle royale for internet dominance. Thirdly, Google has Microsoft scared to death.
Depending on whose figures you believe, Microsoft has about 13% of the search market, compared to Yahoo's 28% and Google with about 43%. Some pundits point to the fact that Microsoft has come from behind in the past to overtake and displace more established rivals. However, Google is not like the other rivals that Microsoft has encountered. It is very profitable; it is growing at a great rate; it well funded with deep pockets; and it has proven itself to be highly a innovative web player. It is not a case of Google defending its...
There's Been a Disturbance in the Google Force

There's Been a Disturbance in the Google Force
Web site operators are clamoring to understand what can best be described as an ongoing disturbance in the Google Force.
Google's search engine, once a clean, lean indexing machine, from a Webmaster's perspective has been slipping badly lately.
Starting about two months ago, there have been scores of people complaining that their Web sites have suddenly disappeared from Google's index for no reason, tantamount to disappearing from the Internet.
Another common gripe is how a Web link mysteriously drops from a prominent place in search results to page 43 or so. The list of complaints goes on......

Windows Server Patch fails to apply: Microsoft charges for support
A few Linux people here will probably comment on the lines of "You should be running Linux". But the reality is I feel comfortable with Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Or used to. You see, in one of the last Automatic Updates one specific patch, classified as "High Priority Security Update" failed to install. I tried to manually download the patch and apply and it again failed to install. Looking at the logs, what do I see?

Cisco: Preparation through Performance

Cisco: Preparation through Performance
Refining ones proficiency in a particular skill or job through repeated execution is indisputably a great way to learn, particularly for the task-oriented processes of information technology. When preparing for IT certification exams, techies should consider getting their hands on the equipment and software that the credentials tests cover. Cisco Systems certification program is well known for its emphasis on performance in both teaching and testing. In the former area, hands-on training is a central component of overall strategy. The multi-modal approach is definitely part of our strategy in just about any curriculum that we build, said Cindy Hoffmann, certification track manager at Cisco.

Cisco Launches Binary Learning Game

Cisco Launches Binary Learning Game
The old binary joke goes, There are 10 types of people in the worldthose who understand binary and those who dont. The new Binary Learning Game from Cisco aims to familiarize people in the second group with the language, which is a key element of the networking field, while helping members of the first hone their skills. Its a constant challenge that a networking professional faces, said Cindy Hoffmann, certification track manager at Cisco. While some people take to it like fish to water, others find it a little more difficult to grasp. One of the drivers behind focusing on the binary numbers had to do with the fact that it can be a stone wall for somebody. If they cant get past that point, then it will be difficult for them to proceed. Looking at the CCNA individuals who are just starting their careers, this is a big confidence booster..."

Click-fraud concerns hound Google

Click-fraud concerns hound Google
John Thys still has not figured out how much his company has paid Google for bogus sales referrals caused by "click-fraud" -- a sham aimed at a perceived weakness in the internet search leader's advertising network.
But Thys says he has uncovered enough of it to conclude that Google is trying to shortchange his company and thousands of other advertisers by offering refunds totaling $60-million to settle a lawsuit.
"It's almost like an insult that they expect us to take this token money," said Thys, director of internet marketing for Radiator.com.
Google also expects to pay $30-million to the lawyers who settled the case on behalf of advertisers, raising the settlement's total value to as high as $90-million. Still, that is a fraction of the more than $10-billion in cash held by the search company......

Warner Bros. Down with Downloading
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
Warner Bros. has decided to join forces with long-time nemesis BitTorrent, announcing Tuesday that the studio has inked a deal with the file-sharing company, whose software has become a feeding ground for illegal downloading.
A large portion of BitTorrent's 65 million users hit up the site to use its peer-to-peer technology to illegally swap media files, while a smaller segment uses its search engine to buy legal copies of videogames and other media.

McAfee warns over Apple virus risk

McAfee warns over Apple virus risk
Anti-virus software firm McAfee has identified Mac OS X as a growing target for malware attacks.
According to McAfee Avert Labs, Mac platform vulnerabilities increased by 228 per cent in the past three years alone, from 45 found in 2003 to 143 in 2005. McAfee didn't say how many of these bugs were critical, preferring to let the numbers speak for themselves.
Microsoft's products saw a 73 per cent increase in security bug discovery over the same three years. While admitting that Windows remains the principal target for hackers, McAfee argues that its findings are enough reason for Mac fans to get protection.

Bill Gates wishes he weren't so rich!
The corporate leader says he doesn't like the attention of being the world's richest man.
May 4, 2006: 3:40 PM EDT
REDMOND, Wash. (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said Wednesday he wished he were not the world's richest man.
"I wish I wasn't. There is nothing good that comes out of that," said Gates, whose personal fortune sank by billions since last week when the software giant disappointed investors by saying new investments would crimp earnings.
The corporate leader who made Microsoft into the world's largest software maker - and who is also one of the biggest philanthropists - is seen as a man who does not like publicity. He explained that he did not like the attention of being the world's richest person.
"You get more visibility as a result of it," he said during an interview conducted by CNBC reporter Donny Deutsch in front of a crowd of people attending a Microsoft advertising...
