On Recertification

In professional education today, there has been a transformation in the way learning is viewed in terms of time — instead of regarding education as an event, it is being seen more as a process. This trend has been born of necessity. The speed of innovation in business and technology demands a virtually constant progression of learning. This has affected several credentialing programs. Nowadays, the actual conferral of a certification frequently isn’t considered to be the terminus of professional development, but rather a step in one’s educational journey. Not surprisingly, then, recertification has become a large part of the regimen of many credentialing programs. Recertification can take many forms, but it always boils down to staying current in the field. It often entails examinations (usually just one), which might be the original test with updates to reflect changes in the topic or a new exam designed specifically for the...

New Certification for Hosting Providers

Web hosting providers -- a dime a dozen, it seems. So, how does a hosting provider remain competitive among the pack? Microsoft believes its new certification track aimed directly at hosting service companies who deploy Microsoft technology is the edge that some of them have been looking for.

"With the right skills, hosting providers are able to deliver a positive experience for their customers, while the certification allows them to stand out in an increasingly competitive marketplace," said John Zanni, director of Worldwide Hosting at Microsoft, through a press release.

Preparing for Experience-Based Certifications

In this newsletter, we frequently discuss how to study written materials, build home labs, get the most out of e-learning and otherwise prepare for certification tests. Not all credentialing programs are exam-based, though. There are a few certs out there that are founded on professional experience — such as The Open Group’s IT Architect — and there likely will be more in the future. What’s more, many high-level IT credentials out there already have some form of work-based prerequisite that’s measured in hours or years.

Putting Windows Vista PCs to the Test

Windows Vista is here. The long-awaited operating system is set to grace current and future builds of desktop and laptop manufacturers as of the end of January. We managed to get our hands on some of the first systems releasing with the Vista OS, and what we found may surprise you. For starters, Vista isn't necessarily that much of a performance upgrade from XP than one might expect on desktops. On laptops, however, systems under Vista were sometimes slower than under XP. Confused? Don't worry, we break down the performance for you.

Microsoft Word Zero-Day Attack Discovered

Microsoft's security response team has launched an investigation into reports of a zero-day attack against a previously unknown vulnerability affecting its ever-present Microsoft Word program. Microsoft Extends Service on XP After '09, For Price

On the eve of the consumer launch of Windows Vista, Microsoft Corp. is extending the period in which it will offer support for the previous version, Windows XP. Consumers who own Windows XP machines already were entitled to get customer service on the software up until April 2009. That date reflects Microsoft's policy of curtailing its support for an edition of Windows two years after a new version hits the market.

Learning While Earning

Learning While Earning

In an ideal situation, certification candidates would be able to devote all their time and energy to the “vita contemplativa technical” — that is, they could focus exclusively on learning about the concepts and practices behind new technologies. Most IT professionals, however, attempt their certification, training and academic endeavors during the time when they’re not at work. For a few reasons, having a full-time job isn’t particularly conducive to an all-out study effort. Almost any profession in the technology sector can take its toll in terms of time, energy and stress, and certification can be an especially difficult endeavor if it doesn’t have the active — or at least tacit — support of your employer. Having said all that, though, there are some benefits that can be derived from taking part in training and certification while holding down a job.

Intel Wireless-N with 802.11n support

Intel today introduced the Intel® Next-Gen Wireless-N network connection, an upgrade to the wireless component found inside Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology and other Intel-based laptops that helps consumers better connect to wireless networks.

As notebook PCs increasingly download broadband-intense content such as movies, videos and music, a more powerful networking solution is needed. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, the Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N technology addresses that need by offering users up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range – while providing up to an extra hour of notebook battery life when compared to existing Draft-N products.
