UK seeks ban on violent Web porn

Proposed new laws could make the UK the first western country to make viewing or downloading violent pornography on the Internet illegal, the British government said on Tuesday. Following the publication of a consultation paper, Home Office Minister Paul Goggins said the proposals would create a new criminal offence of possession of violent and abusive pornography. "This is material which is extremely offensive to the vast majority of people, and it should have no place in our society," Goggins told the UK's Press Association.

The majority of obscene material online is published in the U.S., according to the Internet Watch Foundation, an industry watchdog.

I do not agree with censorship. I am an adult and like to make up my own mind as to what is or what is not acceptable to me. I do not want to pay someone else to look at this stuff and make decisions on my behalf.

Haven't the police got anything better to do in the UK, like catching muggers and car thieves and burglars, rapists etc. I suppose that would mean they would have to get off they lazy butts and actually do something :x

I agree. Personally i dont have an issue with violent porn of any kind, providing all participating members have consented. Fantasy is fantasy, after all. Why should other people suffer simply because some people cant tell the difference.

And as for people being driven to rape/murder because of them, that a heap of horsesh*t. Films, etc dont make you do it, it has to be in you already. And if its in you already, its only a matter of time.

[Edit] Just so we're clear on this, i dont agree with child porn - as children arent old enough to understand whats happening or consent to it. Thought id better make that clear before anyone started getting funny!

      That is taken as read!

Consenting *adults* can do what they wish, as long as it isn't hurting anyone that isn't a masochist :biggrin

Precisley the stand I take guys, its a slipperly slope, and taking action like this could lead to untold amounts of other legislation that turns us into a bigger nanny state!

we are adults, we are educated (for the most part) movies, games, porn do not make people killers/violent,

Just to pose an alternative view, there are those that are not as astute as the people here. There are examples of those that copycat, one of the most tragic being the lad that flung himself out of a window because he wanted to impersonate Superman. Needless to say the lad died.

I am not disagreeing with the premise that people with some nous and intelligence can make up their own minds about such matters, but there are those in society more vulnerable and susceptible to being led astray. It happens. Whether kids blow one another away because of Marilyn Manson [cited as a causal factor for the Columbine massacre] is open to debate. I think such comments are inflammatory and obscure the issue, making somone or something else out to be a scapegoat of matters that may best be explained by others reasons. But then again ... in the words of good 'ole Steve Earle, "Who are you to say for sure?"

P.S. To clarify I do not like censorship and do like Superman and MM. ;)
