I hope what I'm about to say helps you.

If you have the skills (and you clearly do) you WILL find another job. The industry is in much better shape than it was a couple of years ago - especially for desktop support/helpdesk roles. people are finding that, at the Sys Admin/Network Admin level things are starting to get competitive again - with lots of roles now expecting 3 years of specialism in a particular area - but the support market is much better because a lot of the piss-takers that entered the field a few years ago have been found out and have (ahem) 'moved on'.

Two things that will stand out at the moment are how much experience you have (always a winner, tbh) and how you have progressed. I'm assuming that you started with very little experience and worked your way up - that ALWAYS looks good on CVs but is especially relevant now because so many places are beginning to realise that certs don't make that much of a difference - its the ability to learn and adapt that makes you a good prospect for hiring.

Get your CV registered with as many agencies as possible - even the 'generic' agenices like Hudson, Adecco and Monster. When I was contracting, you'd be surprised how many contracts I got from agencies that weren't specifically IT agencies. Usually they were pretty good contracts too - I think a lot of places have set agencies they use for everything, they don't go to specialist agencies for staff any more.

You also have a big advantage that you might not want to admit (or feel embarrassed about using) - you are a woman! Seriously, there are so few women in IT that you have an instant advantage over candidates of similar experience/ability. IT departments are under constant pressure from HR to recruit women because they are so poorly represented in the sector. You should use this to your advantage as much as possible.

Above all, keep your chin up! I've been in your position plenty of times before. If you think its bad at the moment, imagine the stress you'll be under when you go into contracting in a few years time - worrying about whether you'll have a job the next day every day of your life can be stressful - which is the main reason I quit and went perm :D

Make sure you keep a positive attitude - get your CV looked at professionally by an INDEPENDENT recruitment consultant - its worth the outlay simply because they know how to 'play the game' with recruitment agencies.

    Good luck!
