    I have made him a boot cd linux ready

    He's not paying me....YET :D

    He can boot just can't use the files, so I have said to him to try and make his admin account the same as the old one (new install doesn't have an account yet) to see if that will transfer all the permissions. If not I'll give him the boot CD to use.

    I've had this problem before. You need to get the user to take ownership of the documents and then give himself rights to the files and folders.

    This is exactly why my laptop is dual boot Vista U x64 and Ubuntu x64. Its saved my bacon more than once and is the easiest thing in the world to setup. Ubuntu does it all for you and is really really good.

    Note that this doesn't mean calling it the same name.. having an admin account on the machine means he'll be able to take ownership... once he does that, he has to then modify the permissions for his admin account to have full permissions.

    Have attached a pic to show you what the guys mean about replacing ownership....

    Righ-click folder(s) he is having problems with, properties, security then click advanced, you will see the box in the pic.

    in the current owner box, you will probalbly see the SID of the old account owner. Highlight administrator or any other account, then choose replace owner on subcontainers and objects.

    Apply that, then go back into the security permissions and you should now be able to add the desired account permission using the security tab.

    euuuuuuuughhhhhhh flashbacks!

    when i worked in a repair shop, there was a pilot that brought in his machine for the OS to be reinstalled.. He asked if we could keep his 'my documents' contents and put them back in when we reinstalled. when i opened my documents to copy the files over, his folder view mode was large thumbnail and he had lots of pics of him performing sexual acts on his male co-pilot.. (i'm assuming as they were partly wearing uniforms lol)
    :eek::eek::eek:

    very disturbing.. it was like he knew those pics were in there too. When he came to collect it he said 'got all my pics n stuff in there?:tune:wink:' i was like '..yep :puppy:('

    haha he also asked if i could go round to his to install flight sim for him cash in hand :blink
