I've been lurking around this forum this past week searching for A+ advice, and it helped.

Last Thursday I started studying for my A+ Certification. I studied over the weekend and took the Hardware test on Monday and passed. Three days later, I took the OS test and passed. A total of seven days from the time I put my mind on it till finish.

I've put together a few PCs from scratch, but never have touched NT or 2000 in my life (still haven't). I've only had five years of experience in the industry, but it's been on the As/400 iSeries side of the game.

I used Jean Andrews "A+ Q&A" book by DTI Publishing, it was $20 at the local Borders. The book simply compromised of questions, answers, and related explanations. Half the book was for the hardware portion, and other half was OS technologies. Some of the questions were very similar to the exam.

I felt this book was okay, but I don't think it would of been enough for the average PC user to help them pass the test. A second reference is definitely the ticket or try Mike Meyer's book all in one. I had Mike Meyer's book handy, but didn't have the time to read that big honkin' thing.

This was my first Certification and it's got me wanting more. I felt comfortable going into the hardware exam, but the OS exam I went into with the mentality I was going to fail. In fact, the first OS test question displayed I had to "Mark for later review," and that is NEVER a good sign on your first question of the test. However, when I was finished and hit the END button, I was extremely surprised that I passed. I didn't know half the questions, but could always eliminate one answer before making a shot in the dark or educated guess. I still feel the OS test kicked my ass.

A reason to drink to this weekend! :D
