It would seem that your computer cannot handle the game, have you tried playing other games?

    ++ what Mr Grouchy said.

Have you checked for any updated video drivers for your chipset?
Any patches / updates from the game site?
Any tech support on the game site?

Does your graphics setup match the game minimum / recommended spec?

    Or
Phone ebuyer back and add a new graphics card to your order...

Is this 'borrowed disk' SP2? Have you patched the machine with updates from Microsoft? There were a few updates on the DirectX code I seem to remember.

Did you get updated drivers for the graphics system? And the patches from the game manuf?

    What a lot of questions!

You say that this happens with all games???

I would say its a Power supply issue with the graphics card. I had similar faults using a 6800GT card when my power supply was only a 350w one. The PC would reboot or else display really bad corruption in the graphics.

However you say the graphics is onboard? This dosen't normally occure with Motherboard onboard GPUs but list the spec of your PSU just in case.

    Okay, here goes:

    1. for the life of me I dont know why you built a system like that and didnt buget for at least a graphics card. You've effectively nullified all other benefits by placing extraload load on your CPU and memory to compensate for the lack of a GPU and audio processor.
    2. Don't buy XP home for gaming, get XP pro. You'll be able to play games like Prey and Quake 4 (as I recall) that specify WinXP Pro and not Home to play.
    3. Get a legal copy of XP.

I'd not heard of many games that insist on Pro instead of Home. Certainly the spec for Quake 4 doesn't say this.

I have never heard of a game that specifies xp pro over xp home, but i have heard of games saying it needs admin rights.

Prey does not require XP Pro. According to Prey's Support Site:

Quake 4 also does not require XP Pro. According to id's Quake 4 System Requirements:

Yeah, not heard any about any games that need XP pro although some need to run on Vista.

Getting back to the original problem, is there any patches available for the game you are trying to play? Also perhaps invest in a better graphics card?

So have you installed DirectX 9.0c? The game does need at least DX7 installed, but always go with the latest version.

    Directx 9.0c Runtime - Requires Validation ;)
