Ok - on the main machine open a command window and type:
    ipconfig /all
    and post the result here.

You can either open a big command windows and cut'n'paste, or redirect it to a file and load that into notepad and cut'n'paste.

Just a thought, is it safe to display my ip addresses online like this?

    Thanks for that.

If that was the desktop that contradicts your statement about the IP addresses. The desktop seems to have .2 not .3 Can you confirm?

I see that this machine has an Ethernet connection.

To get the networking going you may need to find a couple of ethernet cables and connect the machines direct to eliminate problems with the WiFi stuff.

It is a 'private address' so is safe. If you like - when we get it all going you can edit that posting.

That was the laptop which is the machine I use most. The laptop is .2 and the desktop is .3

With the layout of my hosue, wires are not practical, needs to be wireless. Since both machines now seem to connect, how do I set up a network for file sharing?

You can't until you get the pings to work.

I'm not suggesting that the wires will be the final solution, but interim while we get the network to work. Using wires eliminates the Wireless bit - which can be very difficult to deal with sometimes.

Does the desktop have an ethernet card?

Er. No. Just a modem and wireless network card.

So what you're saying is because both machines are now connected I should be able to ping one from the other? I Cant, just get request timed out. Wouldn't be anything to do with my norton firewall would it?

Almost certainly yes! (Kicks self - I should have thought about firewalls).

Disable the firewalls on both machines and try again.

If you are worried about outside attacks then remove the adsl cable from the back of the router while doing this test.

Cracked it. Allowed Norton to provide an exception on my 2 ip addresses and I can ping each machine from the other machine. Now all I need to know is how to file share. Any ideas?

    Many Thanks

Great. Now right click on a directory on a machine that you need to share, and select "sharing and security". In "Network sharing and security" tick "share this folder".

As it can take some time for the browser system to pick up other machines, short-circuit this by:

On the *other* machine from the one you set the sharing:
    Open the 'run' box
Type the name of the first machine with \\ in front (like \\fred ) and hit return. The shared folder should appear in a window.

I have tried to use Windows home network utility. I can access the desktop from the laptop but not access the laptop from the desktop. Any suggestions?

    Many Thanks

Er - what exactly do you want to do with these networked machines? What resources need sharing?

Only files. But I can't find them in the shared folder on the desktop, only the other way around.

Probably because they aren't in the desktop?

You need to share directories on the main filesystem.

Rereading the last few messages - if you want two way shareing then you have to share the relevant directories on *both* machines.

Use the method I gave rather than a wizard.

Edit: I was getting confused by the fact that the word 'desktop' means two different things here!

read a bit today on wireless networking and the author swears by the wireless/ networking wizard. He basically says this will ensure system registry is altered and should provide hassle free file sharing so do this first, then firewalls, permissions etc...
