I have just downloaded and installed

    c3500xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC17.bin

from cisco.com apparently it is the latest IOS

    'show version' produces

    Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) C3500XL Software (C3500XL-C3H2S-M), Version 12.0(5)WC17, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Can anyone confirm if this is the latest relase for a Cisco c3500XL switch. I thought we were on 12.10 or somewhere around there

Can't confirm or not, however all the searches point to 12.0 being the latest version for the 3500 and 12.1 for the 2500.

All in all, google is your friend - if you can't find the answer on Cisco's own pages :)

    insurin,

Which specific model of the "Catalyst 3500XL switch" do you have?

It's just a standard 24 port fast ethernet, no inline power.

I believe what r.h.lee was asking is what specific version/model the switch is. The Cisco Catalyst 3500 XL Series Switch contains different version/revisions.

my apologies, I only pasted a partial output from 'show ver'. The model is

    cisco WS-C3524-XL

The main reason for upgrading the IOS is so I can enable QOS but I don't think it's available as mls qos, auto qos commands are not being recognised

    insurin,

According to the "Download Software" webpage for the "Cisco Catalyst 3524 XL Switch," the latest IOS version is listed as 12.0.5-WC17(ED). How did you come to the belief that the latest IOS version for your switch is 12.10?

    r.h.lee

It was based on me thinking all IOS's fitted all devices (well at least switches), I think I just imagined in my mind seeing 12.10 a few years back. Obviously I was wrong so just ignore me on that bit

    insurin,

If you look at your original post, you said...

If you read that filename carefully, you should notice the "c3500xl-..." part. That means, this Cisco IOS is intended for the 3500 XL networking device. Each IOS file is intended for their respective networking device and not cross-compatible with other Cisco networking devices.
