i came to work, and the security officer asked me for my ID, i go blimey, you forgot me already! i checked all my pockets, my laptop bag and realised it was at home, then bugger made me sign in.

spent 5 mins waiting for the old bugger whilst he spoke about security issues and how they are tighting the security and sorted a temp pass for me... FFS i needed a pi55, felt like squirting it all over his face, finally he finished, and lets me in...

i clock in, and what ya know... elevators are not working! run to the second floor and ahhh relief!, then 8 more floors left, i finally reach the top!

i turn the lights on for my section, and WTF... my desk has been taken over by someone... (this is the second time now), there no room left for me, i can either sit in another section or at other managers desk, F+it, i decided to sit at the other managers desk, jacked in the network cable, and it wasn't picking no ip, jacked in another one, same problem, tried another, same thing! .. nah, the network cant be down? can it? i get all 3 cables, and do a trace as to where they are jacked into, i found where all three went... no where!

luckily, i requested wireless last week, that saved my ass, logged in, and no network drives... we have a script that connects your drives when you login, this case, i log in, then the wireless kicks in, so the script doesn't work, all i have is C, D and X drives, shite i thought! so i started running, every batch file on my system to find out which ones activates the network drives, strangely its not the one in my start up folder, F knows how they done this? after 5 mins of runnings batch files, i found it. *sigh if relieve!*

log into emails and hmmm interesting!

as i have got this new development project going, i have a new manager.

I emailed him and his manager to inform them that i will be taking 2 days off in the next two weeks.

ATM i am contracted via an agency, been contracted since Jan, i got a cheeky reply back (my not be his intention) from my manager saying

Seriously, is that taking the pi55!

i said to my colleague some time ago that when i found out about this move that, when i do move, slowly, they will push me out of this dept and make me work there over at the dept (that place is hell! its geek alert! i mean proper geek alert they are not normal people who are talented, they are truly geeks!) and it looks like that is happening...

so this is where i need advice,

    i know what to do;

Start studying for my Core, Pass the bugger, then go on to Network +. Apply for proper jobs, at least then having the A+, and this experience, it should help me progress, but i cant get my head aroud studying, when i was i did, i enjoyed it, but the problem is, i get involved in other stuff, which is not necessary, i need some motivation posts to see if it helps...

    Help ME!!!!

Get Off a$$, Study you lazy Git! :cracking

    There, you motivated now? :biggrin

On a more serious note mate you really need to start looking elsewhere I reckon. It sounds to me like the place that you enjoy working at doesn't want you. If they really did couldn't they have stopped your secondment?

Try approaching your manager (at the place you like) and say how you feel, try to judge his/her reaction and go from there.

Just try to remember though, dont drink as much on your way to work, then you wont be bursting!

Si, if they stopped the secondment, then i would of been out of a job, we dont get that many calls for my team, when we do, i generally sort them out straight away, so giving me that other role just ensures im still with their team and still have a job.

i spoke to my manager's manager about how i felt, and that was the actual reason why im based at this office (where i like) 2 days a week, if it was down to my manager, i wouldn't be based here, i'd be over there, and support the calls from there aswell...

Its time to stop f*king about, pick that book up, and start reading because now im really pi**ed off... my manager has just asked me to why im supporting other IT departments! :dry (i reminded him about KPIs and SLAs)

    Four Choices come to mind

    1) talk to your manager, not the new one because he won't know what your work history was but the old one. Find out why you were not told about the changes.

    2) Find out why they have noticed a skillful motivated person under their noses. Could be they think you've not interested in the job or because their Muppets:dunce

    3) Get back to studying :cracking :study

    4) Believe in Yourself!

You only have one life and it's up to you to make the most of it.
When making changes, have patience and give yourself time to think! Change doesn't happen overnight. You need to sit down and work if this job is worth fighting for or not?

if not how can you use the resources around you to get to where you want to be?

    Remember keep an open mind.

We are all here to help you on your journey but it is you who will have to start your journey, no matter how small the steps are!:biggrin 8)

Go for it mate! What have you got to lose?

    Some good advise the UCM.

Cheek remember that everyone experiences those kinda days once in a while no matter what industry you work in, keep reminding yourself that the experience your gaining is going to be invaluable in the future.

There's only 1 person you need to be looking for- you!

Get to studying so you can get to that point where you get to tell them where to go.

As for motivation.....well, STEP TO IT!!!! Don't make me come over there.....it's an awful long swim!

If you want off the bottom rung of that ladder, you better get your head into those books and study mode.

You sit here and post a rant like that and say you need encourment to study? WTF is up with that? If what your going though now is not the push you need I don't know what will be. To improve your working situation cheek, improve youself. Go for the A+, N+, then get your arse into cisco. What the hell you waiting for? No one is going to give you those certs so stop being lazy and hit the books. Only you are responable for your furture. Now I want you to put that same engery into studying that you put into this post. If you do that, you'll get though it in no time. One more word of advice. Glue that dam pass to your arse so they can kiss it when you walk by.

Some good advice here. One thing I would add - which may or may not work - start applying for other jobs. They might realise how valuable you are and pull something out of the hat to encourage you to stay. I recently applied for another internal job (which would have been two desks away from where I am now so not a massive change) but my manager and his manager took me to a coffee shop for an hour to try to persuade me to stop where I was. Not only that, but they told me I was first in line for a more senior postion opening up in Q1 next year which would be almost a 100% pay increase. Needless to say, I stayed where I was, the pep talk really made me feel wanted. On the other hand, if they'd have just said "good luck and see you around" then I'd have known that I would be better off somewhere else.

The witch queen summed it up nicely. If you don't like the situation how it is then do something to change it. We can help with some things but you're the only one that can sit down and do the study/learning for you, not us.

    Fantastic advice Baba.

I just did the same thing at my place a month ago or so. Basically, I was doing more and more general sys/network admin work, and less and less security admin stuff. Thing is, the reason i took the job in the first place was because i wanted to be a security admin (its taken me five years and three abortive direction changes to decide what i want to do in IT). I took a pay CUT to take my current job because of it. I got pissed off one day and just chucked my CV out to a couple of agenices - got an interview the same day, went through the process of getting the job then, when i had the offer letter from the other place, I told my current manager I was leaving. Net result - they had a meeting then sat me down and told me that they wanted to keep me, bumped my pay up by 7k a year (not quite what i was being offered at the other place) and promised me that I would be doing the job I signed up for within three months.

You just have to take the bull by the horns sometimes! Get off your ass and study - you've got experience, now you just need the certs to back it up!
