Ive been a landscaper and a builder for a variety of companies over the last ten years, but always seem to end up as the guy who gets called into the office to fix the computer/printer etc. So after a two year break traveling, Ive decided to study for my A+ and get a job indoors for a change.

    Welcome to CF.

I hope you can afford what is likely to be a dramatic drop in income.

Being indoors is always nice in the winter, but in the summer you'll be pining for an outside job again, just as I was a few years back! Good luck with your A+!

Sorry to be so blunt but i think it's something you seriously need to consider.

The stories about people in IT earning huge sums of money are mostly false. Entry level jobs are tedious and do not pay well. Sure, you can work your way up the ladder and hopefully land a job that is well paid but this can take many years.

You have been doing what you know well for ten years now and building and landscaping can be very lucrative indeed.

Changing careers hits your pocket harder than you might think.

    But good luck!!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

The lads may be being blunt and bad, but what they're saying is the short and long of it.

However, coming from a concrete slab manufacturing background myself, I sympathise with your change in careers! If you ever managed to encounter and sucessfully use our product during your landscaping career, you'll have the nerve and staying power for a career in IT :tongue

Good luck with your A+ studies, and I hope you enjoy the forums.

    Thanks
I have looked at the financial aspect of this change quite seriously, but having worked from a young age in outdoor, physical, trades (and been exploited quite badly) I physically couldn't continue in this type of work till retirement so rather than waiting till i cant work. I decided to train up, and change career, now whilst I'm able to earn a living elsewhere.
