This chapter is focused on a rapidly evolving networking technology that provides the capability to transport voice, data, video, and images. Commonly referred to by the acronym ATM, Asynchronous Transfer Mode provides the opportunity for both end users and communications carriers to transport virtually any type of information using a common format.
