Reading and writing from an OS on a differnt partion

Hi everyone, I have been reading up on partions and I know a bit about them anyway I know that for a user to read from say axp partion to a windows 98 partion they will need a compatible file system which I think would be ntfs? But going into detail with the partions. I am aware you have a system partion and boot partion and they mean the opposite so the boot partion contains system files and system partion contains boot files. Would boot files me something like the master boot file and ntvdm?

Also would you need to format just the boot file with ntfs? or would you format both?

If someone could explain this is simple terms it would be appreciated. Many Thanks,

Dave

a win xp system can read a win 98 partition, but a win 98 partition can only read an XP partition if it is FAT32.

RE the boot partition and system partition, in a windows standard install the files would be in the same partition.

Somone will come along and give you a better explanation i'm sure

Thanks mate, I thought a win xp can only read/write to a 98 if its fat or fat32?

I understand that a 98 cant read/write a xp without it being ntfs file system.

Thanks for explaining is there anyone that can confirm this?

Dave

Explain further what you are trying to do, you can actually dual boot from the same disk you know?

As has already been explained, you need to format with Fat32 because Win98 doesn't natively support NTFS.

If you have a secondary data disk and it's been formated with Fat32 then it will be accessable from pretty much any OS.

No, you have it wrong, 98 can only write to FAT or FAT32, it will not be able to read an NTFS partition at all. XP can write to any of them.

Ahhh that clears it up, thanks mate. Also do you have to format the system files with fat32 manually because when I have done it in XP it does it automatically? Does it do the system files or the whole partion? For it to be able to use 98. Because I am reading up about system partions and boot partions. And I read somewhere that only one of them needs to be fat /fat32?
