This isn't a tip for remembering as such, but to begin with I recommend carrying around a USB stick with useful software on it like AVG Free, SysInternals tools from Technet, Magic Jellybean Keyfinder and also these two pictures...

We've got diagrams in our server/work room also. Another thing is that we buy patch panels and network sockets that are colour coded (for the back end work)

Yes but a few months ago this came up in a job interview so i couldn't look it up

I have made up patch cables many a time, i am just b**ger*d if i can remember them in my head.
