Why do you have to include the id attribute in the <map> tag when creating image maps, i know it wouldnt validate in xhtml wothout it, but maybe ill learn why, just wondering!

I've created image maps a few times, but I can't recall ever needing to use the ID tag. I always thought it was optional to be honest. I'll check on the net and see what I can come up with.

Edit: A quick search found this linky. The W3C Markup Validation page that the page has a link too is a good resource.
