It's a good link with some great points.<p>

At my own job I have the full spectrum with some genuinely talented individuals that are selling themselves short, people who aren't so bright but have lots of passion and those who I genuinely have no idea why they are in this field.

FWIW i'm one of the geeky types that genuinely finds computers facinating and while it;s nice to know that one day I might make a comfortable living, money isn't really a big motivator for me right now compared to the chance to get valuable experience.

I never expected it to be easy to get my first job in IT, but I didn't expect it to be nigh on impossible, as this article seems to claim it will be.

Kind of left me with a "well, what DO I need to do?" feeling

Is it really possible for someone with a bit of experience garnered through other jobs, i.e. nothing on a c.v., to turn round and compete for, even an entry level, job against kids coming out of college with two years worth of education and work experience?

I havent lost hope, I finishd uni in 99 (doing bussines computing) although I havent looked for 4 years I am still hopefull I'll get a job in IT thats why I decided to do some certs.

Its a tough field to get into, thats where hopefully getting a couple of certs will help me have an advantage over the competiton when I go for a job.

You just need to be persistant and dedicated.

If a kid is coming out of college with two years of work experience, they probably won't be pursuing entry-level jobs... because they've already entered the field if they've got work experience.

Is it possible for you to compete against kids coming right out of college who have no work experience? Sure... but their degree will give them an advantage. That's why you should get the A+ certification to give you an advantage over those who don't have it. Certifications aren't a golden ticket... but some solid entry-level certifications will certainly get you more noticed than if you didn't have anything.

I can say go and search job on job search engines rather than going to each career page and manually finding jobs. Jobmixi.com , indeed are some of the job search engines I have encountered.

haha you can tell when someone is asking for help on an IT Forum. Most forums its "have you tried turning it off and on again". Get the proper command prompts round here!
