    Nice one Pheonix.

Will report back in a mo, see if it works this time.

    edit:

It gives the mac address I supplied, and says unknown host.

Not sure I'm doing this right.

What am I suppose to put in the "Nameserver" area.
Is this the name of the network, or wot :?:

Also you put x's after the nameserver, so i presume this is the add of the router, the internal address :?:
But I put this in before, in the default gateway area.

Or am I supposed to put the external ADSL IP in the default gateway area, and the internal IP after the default gateway bit.

(seriously confused at mo :unsure :evil )

ok ill be a bit clearer
just didnt want to put things in brackets incase thats how you thought it was meant to be

ifconfig eth0 <ip address to give this machine> netmask <subnet>
route add default gateway <your gateway address, prob ur router>
echo "nameserver <address of your DNS server, either local or remote>" >> /etc/resolv.conf

now to be honest, nameservers and default gateways aint really a requirement if your not gonna be connecting to the net, or using names so i usually give all three steps

once u have established an IP address see if you can ping ur laptops IP from knoppix, thats our first aim

if you just did the 'ifconfig' line and not the nameserver ones, you wont be able to resolv dns names, so you will have to try and ping the laptops ip not its name

It's a lot easier being able to see that screenshot to be honest.Saves many words.
Your explanations are fine, but it's sometimes difficult and frustrating throguh forum psots alone to understand things clearly.

Anyway, I did it again, and nothing happened.Suppose I was expecting it to do soemthing.
So I tried pinging my router.Guess wot, it found it.

It says after the ping <IP address (IP address again (yes in brackets)) : 56 data bytes>

    Ok, now wot :?:

PS: I would psot a screenshot, but as I'd have to take the screenshot, put it onto CD, load it into my laptop, then upload it here.I couldn't put it onto CD as my CD drive is occupied with knoppix CD.Plus I'm cr@p with linux, not that you could tell of course

    Edit

Forgot to say, i can ping my laptop, as wella s the router.

now im not entirely sure how to mount a windows share to a linux machine , always seems to bork for me
so this is what you need to do

Start the SAMBA server on knoppix

click YES so that it mounts all drives it can find as shares (i dont have any NTFS shares on my knoppix as its vmware so cant test it out for you)

    Acess this from your laptop

    \\IP OF KNOPPIX\

if it asks for a password
    KNOPPIX\knoppix

seems to work with no password
    attached screen shots for you

AFIK knoppix 3.2 also has samba included. I'm currently with 3.4 and it's pretty cool.

Flex I found this link for you and it gives a better step by step than we could do here.

    Excellent link nugget :D :thumbleft

I've found my laptop through browsing, but when I double click I don't see any shares, nor the share I just created.

I'll have to try the second approach if I can't egt to see the shares this way.

try set the user name and password, my shares were guest shares, but samba still needs a means to connect to the remote $RPC so put the admin name/password in the mount promt, worked for me, listed the shared, couldnt quite mount them tho, got some wierd error

I can't even get to the mount prompt until I've selected a share.
Clicking on it before selecting a share doesn't bring the mount box up.

As I can't see any shares, there's no mount box.

no no, but in the LibNeighborhood, there should be an 'Add' function to add a machine, add your machine, and configure it to use a password and username
    then it should list shares

    I've obtainedan IP address manually.

I try to ping the router, and the laptop, and I get nothing.

I've tried setting a user and password, but it makes no difference phoenix.I still can't see any shares. Also, yesterday I managed to connnect my laptop in the linneighbourhood, by browsing the network.
    However today, it doesn't appear.

    Any ideas

Edit: Also, when I check my router, in the section 'attached devices' I only see my laptop, not my desktop. But if I've obtained an IP address, shouldn't it show up here.

um the router may only list devices its given dhcp addresses too, if your using a manual ip it may not be listed
thats dependant on your router though so i couldnt say for sure

The router was fine, handed out DHCP IP addy as soon as the machine booted.
    Class :!:
My problem, as you've read int he other thread, was the little issue of not having the desktop plugged into the router

I've actually sorted this problemo and am using XP Pro at this very moment :D

I had to activate with a customer rep at MS.Simple as that in the end, but I'm not used to install issues like this.i was trying to activate over the ent, and when that wasn't working I thought the phone option would be the same.
Until someone explained to me how this worked, I rang the number and hey presto, sorted :!:

Geez I certainly know how to take the long way round

I'd like to put 2KPro on this amchine now, and get rid of XP Pro.Like some others, I can't be doin with XP Pro.Well at least I ahven't caught on yet, and anyway I'm studying 2kpro so might as well be using it all the time.

However I have nowhere to backup my data to, apart from CD's, as my laptop died :(

Will see what I canc ome up with.

Thanks for the replies ont his thread, it's been interesting.
