On this particular subject, I know that 2000 uses its system directory as WINNT, doesnt XP use the name WINDOWS which (obviously) is different and therefore a 2000 install will go into a different place on the same drive?

    Please discuss, class,

I have a somewhat radical idea but I don't know if if will work. If you have the original XP Home disk, can you repair the OS enough to boot into it?

@Cartman - you are correct regarding Directory names, but I'm fairly sure the installation will still detect an incompatible OS version, and therefore not allow you to proceed.

    For Flex's sake, I hope I'm wrong, though !

Flex, can you use a boot disk and boot into a command window. It would be possible to copy your files to another drive from the CLI if you can't boot into the GUI. Just another thought.

OK Flex with Knoppix you can burn your data to cd. Boot into Knoppix. There is a burning program called k3b on the Utiltites menu along with a setup program right underneath.

Simply right-click on the desktop icon for the partition containing your files (should be mounted automatically), and you will see "Create Data CD with K3b." Do File > New Project, drag and drop the files you want to copy, and there you go. Should work.

I bought this desktop two and a half years ago when I knew zip about computers, so don't remember how I set it up.

I think I remember that it just came witht he drivers, and there's no actual XP home disk.
I'll ahve a route for the original disk, I know there here somewhere, now where did I put them...........

Alternatively flex you can boot knoppix, look under system on the menu, find the program qtparted and resize your partitions to get some free space and then install win2k.

I would suggest to try to burn your stuff to cd first then do the resizing. :?:

OK, I'm in linux knoppix right now, trying to sort this mess out at last.

    Question:

Is their a way of connecting to my laptop through my router, from the desktop which has linux on it :?:

This would a lot easier than ar$ing around with CD's :x

    Thanks :!:

do youy have DHCP enabled anyhere?
if so KPX should pick up an address automatically if its detected your network
and with smb it should be able to connect to a network share on your laptop

if it doesnt have an ip address but has detected your network (test with ifconfig, if it only lists the loopback things should be working but no ip address has been set)

    do the following

    ifconfig eth0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask 255.xxx.xxx.000
    route add default gateway xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    echo "nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" >> /etc/resolv.conf

    that should work
ive only tested it on SLAX, the rest of the times ive used it have been full distros, not live CDs (SLAX is a live CD)
ofcourse KPX may have some form of GUI or something you can do it in also

check ifconfig at the console and see if you have any network probs

just booting it up to see if i can find out why its not working for you mate
you may have to open a 'root terminal' as some of the window managers only open user terminals by default

Nelix sent me this CD, to recover from a laptop fault.
He sent me instructions, and there was something I had tot ype when booting up.
Unfortunately for the life of me I can't quite remember what this was. It's ont he tip of m tongue, but it's just not there :hhhmmm

I've lost the instructions, but am continuing to look through my pile of rubbish for them.I've emailed and PM'd Nelix, so hopefully he'll know, and hopefully he'll be around today.

Or maybe I'll remember the command :smile-l
