Just out of curiousity... you are trying to connect to your flatmates hub and not someone elses in the neighbourhood?:blink

What's the name of the BThub network on the laptop that is connected to it?

    avi_sinha,

    Questions:
    1. Which wireless technology does the secondhand laptop's wireless NIC use?
    2. Which wireless technology does the wireless access point use?

because a lot people don't know how to name their wireless routers, some don't even know how to setup the security on them and leave this off for other people in the neighbourhood to piggyback on their signal!

Where I am, if I switch on my wirless card on my laptop (which I am currently typing on) then I can see 3 belkin wireless routers. 2 of them have been name 1 just states Belkin. The others show BT HUB and Netgear.

I can see 1 that is unsecure and is broadcasting a good signal. It's got no security - god only knows why??

Nothing wrong with having the default name, it only becomes a pain if someone else has the same one, at the end of the day, its only a SSID. Even, if you hide it, there are plenty of software to "retrieve" it.

Priority is alway encryption, and a strong passphrase.

That's just my point! What if (in this case) someone else has the same network name and avi is trying to connect to the wrong one?:blink

He will get a message about his creditials being incorrect, and if he does connect to it (next doors unsecured wireless), then he should pick up an IP addy thats distrubed by the neighbours router.

It all depends on his findings... ....i can be totally off target here,

I would try giving yourself a static ip address that is in the same range as whatever address your flatmate's laptop has. Also, check the dhcp configuration on the wireless router to make sure that there are available leases and check that mac address filtering isnt enabled or, if it is, add the mac address of your wireless card to it.

I doubt installing firefox has anything to do with your problem, probably just a coincidence.

Static would work fine, but still this is only a workaround, and would not permanently fix this issue, especially, if he takes the laptop somewhere else, and try to attach to a different subnet/gateway, he'll be back to square one.

Are you using the software that came with the wireless card to connect or are you using the wireless settings included with XP?

The only other changes which I made was ..I deleted most of the list of router which I didnt wanted to use.

It was picking up routers name of previous owner....

so Had to delete it and then on the problem started....

second..... I am using the driver which is provided with XP..... i am not using the manufacturer one ...because I cant download it ...this seems bit different as the wave plus WV1200 does not have link to download the driver...

Strange thing in my network connection....

    there is 1394 Connection
    1394 Net Adapter

this shows connected.... I am not really sure what is it....

but it worked initially.....when this 1394 thing was there.

seems like some from Scotland is replying to my thread... i am in Edinburgh .... can someone help..

    I ll buy you a pint..mate

I uninstalled this 1394 thing....... eventually it is still appearing on my network connection page...

but this time when I tried to connect to BT home hub it asked for network key

    and voila....I am on....

After doing some research on this, am i right in assuming that this is caused by the fact the Windows has created a "network conneciton" using firewire ?

It could be, it is possible to network PCs with firewire ports although it isn’t very common.
