Indeed - and you have now lost the special settings that somebody found was required to make it work.

So you have to vary the various memory settings until you find them again. Or replace the memory.

I'm finding that most of my old PCChips sites are no longer operating, and PCChips themselves no longer seem to have any support for Socket 7 boards. So I'd be *very* wary of a flash these days.

You will need the flash utility. Usualy small enough in those days that it would fit on a floppy.

Software that actualy does the flash update. It puts the image file, which it appears is all you have, into the BIOS 'rom'.

Google flash utility for the type of bios you have. After a brief search I was able to find this site. Not sure if it will help or not. http://www.wimsbios.com/ Also when flashing make sure the computer is not touched, reset, powered off, or looked at funny. Once again bad things can happen when flashing your bios. Good luck again.

Flashing the BIOS can be dangerous with an old machine. Since you have put the BIOS back to factory default then its almost certainly something in there has changed. I’m not convinced that flashing the BIOS would help but I could be wrong. :biggrin

OK. Set the CAS latency to 2 and make sure the FSB is set at 100. Do you have to manually set the multiplier or is that auto on your BIOS?

Ok if that doesn't work try setting the multiplier. I mean no offense by this but do you know what you multiplier is? If not what you do is you take the speed of your cpu and divide it by the FSB (i.e. cpu = 550 mhz / FSB=100 = 5.5 multiplier)

Not quite the end. I just wanted to say, well done to all concerned 8)

Is there a lesson to be learned? Do not reset the bios to defaults without first making a note of how it is configured beforehand.

Glad it is working for you and that you gained some more knowledge from the experience :D
