I'm a bit like GBL in that I do not work in IT (yet) but am working towards it.

I currently work for a Criminal Legal firm where I draft and report their bills to the Regulator (Legal Services Commission) and try and make sure that all the rules and regulations are followed.

It’s a medium sized firm with a boss that hates technology and knows nothing about computers. I have purchased and installed around 15 standalone PCs for the office with some limited networking and access to the Internet through a 5-port switch. Also implemented a couple of "home plugs" as well and they seem to work fine. But like I said, the boss is a $£$%*r and simply cannot understand the advantages of a full network.

I troubleshoot all the PCs when I have time as well as the printers and plan to will get into a proper IT career soon if it kills me :biggrin

    Hi,

I'm Freddy, and according to some people here, all I do is hate MS! :lolbang :bud :hahaha :box

    Seriously,

I'm a newbie Linux admin who started out as an intern for a web-based business after almost 5 years of hands-on lab work in my basement and got hired as consultant to continue doing what I was doing as an intern. I administer our email, web, and database servers. I also do documentation, write scripts in bash and python for automating processes, and will be beginning to slowly migrate our site to Zope and Plone over the next year or so. I just finished designing the structure for our documentation project and will be designing our disaster recover plan, as the business has never had one before. At the same time I have a Plone site up and running with an integrated Wiki in it in my lab and am learning how to extend and add new functions to the site. In other words, I'm getting paid to play the way I see it. I'm having a great time and developing some really valuable skills while I'm at it.

I also have a very good relationship with the business owner. I'm a part of a team and it feels great. I couldn't have asked for a better fit for me. I'm independent as to hours and schedule, and yet I'm very much a part of a team.

Presently Director of IT at a Technology College in the East Midlands (fancy title for an assistant head from a techie background). Presently also working 2 days a week as Technical Consultant for the LA ICT in Schools team as we roll out MOSS 2007 to all county schools (eagerly waiting to get my hands on a certain book by a certain author!)

Oh yeah ... I dabble with a variety of online groups and stick my nose into lots of educational things across the country.

I used to be a bread and butter techy, worked up from desktop support to network architecture

Now i'm employed as a Technical Consultant specialising in virtualisation and storage, I assist a number of clients with pre and post sales advice, technical planning and design, and sometimes even implementation services

Basically I'm an evangelist for the Virtualisation industry, and the more folk I can show the light to the better, although my official responsibilities give me a few extra things to do here and there :)

I've read your posts on VMWare with great interest, it's something I'd like to get more exposure to - mind sharing any pointers on where to start?

At the moment the extent of my experience is the free versions - Virtual PC, Virtual Server, VMWare Server etc. I can definitely see it being useful in my company particularly for setting up test environments and the like.
