you wont get 35k a year for your first job that sort of money is paid to very experience people. Think 18k and you will be nearer the mark.

I dunno. I still think that plenty of the small design companies are getting a decent amount of work - especially if they can undercut the big boys. But its true that more and more companies are setting up sites with Drupal or Joomla and hiring people to maintain them. Needless to say this isn't very creative - or well paid. Plus more and more designers will expected to be able to create content for iPhone and iPad into the bargain.

And if HTML5 takes off in the way that Steve Jobs seems to hope it will then all those peeps who've specialised in Flash will find the rug has been pulled from under them somewhat...

If you think that what a professional web designer/developer does bears any resemblance to what your mum does then you may be best advised to STAY a million miles away from a career in web design ! :biggrin

Big agencies are looking for the exact same people (and use the exact same technologies) as small agencies, ie. those who know how to hand-code, not simply use a software package.

    How dare you!
My mum rocks at web design!!!
(well, she would do if she could use a keyboard)

I've dealt with big and small companies.
Big ones can overcomplicate things and be quite expensive to several orders of magnitude.
Small companies often have very talented people working for them, but often **** up the business side of things like time management, realistic expectations, proper invoicing and change control.

Each to his own I guess...

Yeah I guess I could be wrong , but I would estimate something like 0.0001% of mums code their web-site using HTML and CSS - but of course maybe your mum is one of those 1 in a million, which means I am wrong in this instance.

All design agencies I see in my area are asking for skills like HTML/CSS/Javascript/Flash/ActionScript plus the whole range of Adobe product experience and programming and database skills. And they seem to be doing quite well in this recession, probably due to companies of all kinds putting more effort into their online marketing strategies in order to win business.

Your right some good designers **** up on the business side - one in my area stopped trading recently even though he has an excellent portfolio. I think he just is holding out, working for himself to keep autonomy, but a bigger company probably would take him on tomorrow if he applied.
