Not sure how many people use this phrase, maybe it is just local to my area, but I have always thought of a vacuum cleaner as a 'hoover', irrespective of its brand. Even though 'Hoover' make fridges, freezers, cookers etc. a 'Hoover' will always be a vacuum cleaner to me. The word just seems to fit somehow?. Not sure if this is just a local colloquialism though.

It's just used now as a generic term. Like biro for pens and transit for vans:dry

This thread is very interesting for me, Marketing is a bit of a hobby of mine, as it's something that plays an ever important role in what I do, digging deeper than the 'brand' highlights some interesting thought patterns among people

Keep up the good work guys :)

Yep, it's local... although we have Hoover vacuum cleaners, we don't call vacuum cleaners "hoovers".

I am afraid I would tend to think of even a Dyson as a 'hoover' - not sure their marketing department would like that idea though!

...isn't that like the cellotape - sticky tape...tipex -corrector fluid type thing though? They are all things that have stuck in our heads due to heavy marketing...but actually the aren't the real names for the products....does that make sense? :blink

Ulysees Ruled :) Channel 4 repeated it about 50 times in a row after they nicked it of BBC1

I can't remember if they made it back, I don't think so or it had some mad twist like in dungeons & dragons where dungeon master was vengers dad. Can't remember too long ago now.
