Freddy and I were talking about computer names in the Software forum and I thought it would be an interesting topic...like sharing our desktop pictures.

My laptop is named Hal (yes...after the computer in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". I got the idea when I was watching the movie "Independence Day". When the character David is on board the alien shuttle and opens up his laptop, you can see the red HAL "eye" on the screen and it says in a very familiar voice: "Good Morning, Dave".

My lab machine is named Abraham and the family machine is named Tevye. Most of my VMs have pretty unimaginative names but I did name my Windows 2000 Server VM Mitzs. One of the guys here at work once named a server Fat B@st@rd but the boss made him change the name. :tongue

What about the rest of you?

Mine are all named after federation starship classes, bar my primary workstation which is named after a perticular ship

    Workstation: Enterprise
    Linux Server: Soverign
    DC: Excelsior
    ISA: Intrepid
    Exchange: Ambassador
    Laptop1: Akira
    Laptop2: Defiant
    Secondary Desktop: Cheyenne

VMs and other less used systems dont really follow this naming convention, but i have enough scope for several more rigs to follow the scheme :)

My main three are called Valhalla, Ragnarok and Fenris. Any others that I create also follow the Nordic god schema, such as Loki, Thor and Jotunheim etc.

Well, there's one solution for that. Get an avatar that hasn't been shot full of holes and has let all the fizz out. Get yourself a full can of Dr. Pepper. :biggrin

No real theme to mine, I choose the name as I add a machine (only 3 at the mo).

My PC: Dominator - basically cause I say what goes on my "network"

    Daughters: Pink-room - 7-yr-old, 'nuff said !

File server: Matrix - recently added, and the name chose itself for a (crappy) server that may be used for many different testing uses.

So nothing really exciting in my names.

My comp is just at the default name given at setup..

c64zx81acorn or something like that, but during the course of a day, it's mostly B*******d.Y.now, :D

If I reallly want it to work properly, it gets called pleezemate, but it rarely helps

    For Jackbauer:

I REPEAT My comp is just at the default name given ....

My 2 are named after mine and my girlfriend's,

    Pete
    Katie

I don't mess with hers (unless it's playing up) and she doesn't mess with mine.. it's a beautiful thang.

Luckily for her she's chosen to share her life with a computer enthusiast so she gets one all to herself- on the broadband connection and everything! :biggrin
