What "certification" related thing (or lack of) do you regret the most?

I regret totally cocking up my BTEC course, could have spent 3 years in the alcoholic haze of a university course if I hadn't :(

I also regret my total inability to concentrate today. I've got 4 or 5 different jobs to do today and I can't settle to any of them.

I have a mixture of almosts - 'non-regrets' as it were.

Without sounding too whimsical, this is because I completely *love* the position I am in now, both in my life personally and with work - and any variation on the trials and tribulations I've been through to reach this point would have resulted in a different 'future' now.

Okay, I did sound whimsical. Oh well.

But for example - I regret not doing a degree when the opportunity first arose (after sixth form) but I'd probably be retraining as something else or still trying to find a job to do with my BA in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. I regret not getting into IT earlier, with my very round-about career route, but I got wind of this job through personal connections, not through job hunting - so it, again, probably wouldn't have happened any other way.

Yep. Still whimsical. But I'm only 25, and have many years ahead of me to hammer the hell out of the certification industry :)

Don't worry about it matey. I've not found a use for any of the Cisco CCNA material I studied in my current position. Sods law states that by the time I do, it'll have expired.

I think it was 110 questions with a passing score of 700 or more. You had 240 or 355 minutes to do it in, can't remember exactly. Baring in mind the questions could come from any of four other exams you can see why it was an absolute monster and scared me off! So I too would like to say well done to Mike for passing it.

It was an unscored, four-hour, Pass/Fail exam. I had 94 questions... split into four small sub-exams of 22-26 questions, and each sub-exam ( 215/216/217/218 ) was timed separately. Fail a single sub-exam, and you'd fail the entire thing and have to take the four exams individualy (as if you were doing the MCSE from scratch all over again)! :blink Even worse, they didn't tell you if you failed until the very end... if you had failed the first section, you'd not have known it until struggling through 75-or-so more questions!!!

Probably just the companies I work for have sapped the enthusiasm out of me. My current employer won't even give me a day off to site relavant exams eventhough I even pay for them and they help me with my job. I have also up to now spent £90 on equipment to do my job as they wouldn't even buy me a screwdriver set to do a job and other issues. The company I work for a massive so this just makes me a little annoyed to say the least. I am trying to get out of support in the next year or two to move more into a 3rd line or specialist role.

The CCNA course I studied must be a lot different to the exam then as it did go a lot into network technologies. As for a change of career mortgage and child pretty much close that door. Don't get me wrong I enjoy IT but possibly should of kept it as a hobby.

I totally agree as well if you don't have an interest or have lost your interest in IT it's hard to get back into the swing of things. I wizzed through my first 3 MCSA exams in about 1 year and have taken 3-4 years to get around to doing 70-291 due to life/lack of interest and being lazy :( I think a big part of me hating my job is working for companies (some very big companies as well) who just don't want to invest in me to get to my full potential. In return they would of reaped the benefits. The fact I had an interview with a company willing to invest in me and I would of taken the job eventhough I would of taken a £4k hit on my salary. Also every exam I've done is off my own back and the final straw is being asked to take holiday to sit exams.

I just bought another server so hopefully will start to pick myself up and progress my career with Citrix/VMWare and Hyper-V study.

Sounds like a change of employer may work wonders for you. If it's a drop-in-salary issue, the extra cash isn't worth it, dude. Why make an extra 4k and be miserable? Dude, I could probably make a LOT more as a Cisco router tech... but would I enjoy that even CLOSE to as much as developing training content? I tell ya, my exams don't crash at 2 in the morning, so not having to carry a pager is worth the potential loss of salary! And that's just ONE benefit!

Wise words, sometimes I think I should have heeded them myself.

The financial industry pays sweet salaries, but my previous job was "extemely" comfortable. Current one is chock full of ups and downs... But I bear through it, at least it means I get to have a few extra toys at the end of the month (for now).

Come on mate, get 291 done and you'll get a boost gaining your MCSA. Then as BM says, get your behind into gear and find another job. The 2 firms I've worked for have been the exact opposite to be honest so I think you've just been unlucky. My last employer gave me somthin like 3k of training even tho they knew I was leaving them and my current one has just given me enough kit to create a Cisco lab at home. Not bragging, just saying don't fall out with IT as a whole, you need a change of scene thats all. Jim

Think you and BM are right I really need a boost and probably a change of employer. I have a pretty easy job in that I'm in Newcastle and my managers are in London so I look after the office and sort things out onsite as well as help out in the other offices but for such a large company they are rubbish to work for as they just don't invest in their staff or at least not me. I've just bought another server and have mapped out the next year so if I have to I will take the days off unpaid and they can go @@@@ themselves if they can't be bothered with me :biggrin

Cheers guys for the encouragement I think we all need a kick up the backside from time to time.

Good on you mate. Thats the spirit. Get your certs and a bigger better job. My firm have invested heavily in me so I'm sure you can get the same. Maybe check out our jobsite

I saw you got a ML115, I did myself a few weeks ago. Great machine for home. Did you max out ya memory? I got a great deal on 8GB from Dabs.

I only got 4GB for £40 from Scan (non-ecc RAM) but might increase it if needed. Where did you get your ML115 from? I bought mine fro £209 delivered from Ebuyer as they got 15 in and pretty much sold them all in 24 hours. Went like hot cakes and was going to post here but they sold out before I had the chance. I also bought a while back a Dell T105 and plan on running Hyper-V on that and ESXi and the ML115. I got myself a Technet subscription so have no excuse in getting my MCSA done.

£220 from Dabs but they have gone up now. Paid £34 x 2 for 8GB DDR2, threw an additional 500GB WD Back HD for £42 and was so impressed just ordered another one so I can get some RAID on the go. Put a 1GB ATI 4670 graphics card in as I'll use it as a media server too. Ordered a really fast USB stick to put ESXi 4.0 on as I'm all done playing with Hyper-v, which is excellent IMO. I#ll put it on the motherboard USB slot obviously.
