I would like to test the System Restore on a Doamin Controller feature using windows 2000 server

I have taken the system state backup of the domain controller in question now what i want to know is what would i need to do to "break the ntfrs replication on the server to test the backup to see if it will repair the problem

I have an issue on a production server that requires this done as the normal restarting of the service is not fixing it and it suggests a system restore and not having done it before i dont want to screw up AD

any more info needed let me know

    cheers guys

You couls try changing the servers IP address? that would most likely well and truly screw things up! Not sure if the SSD backs up things like that though?

Just a question though - Did Windows 2000 Server have an ASR option? (Can't recall from memory)

You would press F8 on reboot and select Directory Restore Mode

to restore the backed up system state

just want to know if i can break replication to then restore it ?

I may be reading this wrong but remember that there is 2 types of restore involved here - Authoritative and non-authoritative. The first one replaces the existing AD with the backed up version and then lets replication happen to all the other DC's. The latter restores only the AD objects that are missing from AD kepping and updating AD.

it needs to be a non-authoritive restore according to the event log error
