I've been on a mission lately to find a cost effective, dare I say slightly more power than I need (for longevity of course!) home lab solution, as I look to join the exclusive VCAP club, building on my recent VCP 6.5 DCV. I've stumbled across a vExpert website by tinkertry and think I've found the perfect machine! A Supermicro SuperServer SYS-5028D-TN4T (rolls of the tongue) that is powerful, quiet, compact etc running an Intel Xeon D1541 or 1567 so 8 or 12 core :) can take 128GB!!! RAM. 6 SATA3 bays, 1 M.2 NVMe slot, 4 x 10GB NICs, need I say more. You can read more on this blog page

I have umm'd and ahh'd about the D1500 series motherboards for a while, my concern at this time is have you actually looked at the cost of 32GB ECC Dimms? They are over £300 per stick. That's just too much for my book atm, when you consider that when I built my Shuttle PCs they cost me £500 each (and that's with the quad port nic).

Don't get me wrong, if I have 5k to spend on lab hardware I would get 3 of them and upgrade my switch to 10GB and get faster storage but man I am not going to spend that much money atm (especially as I am now more hands off than on).
