Hi, I am looking to get into the IT world and would like to study Web Design. I live in Tenerife though, so I'm looking for self-study courses in order to build up a portfolio. I came across www.totaltraining.com
Has anyone had any experience with their online package? I would appreciate any feedback at all ;)

Hi, my names Lee. I'm from the UK and currently live in Tenerife, Spain. I would like to get into the IT world, mainly into Web Design.
The problem I have is that I work full time and here in Tenerife there are not many courses available to me, most are in the UK or mainland Spain.
I was looking to achieve the Master CIW qualification, would this be the right choice do you think?
I have read that a lot of people decide to study by their own methods and build up a portfolio rather than acquiring a certificate, diploma, etc...would this be a better option? If so I came across a good looking website called TotalTraining.com, they offer a detailed library of IT material and costs just under $300 for a years online access, I would appreciate any feedback on this

Look forward to any replies ;)

    Hi Lee,
I haven't used TT personally, but have you tried the free 10 hours of training they still offer (I think) on their website? It may give you a taste of what they are like.
I currently use Lynda.com and I'm subscribed to their yearly online package which I find very good. If you wanted to try Lynda.com then they offer similar free trial like TT do.

Lee what exactly are you wanting to learn? Are you wanting to learn Adobe or MS tools for Web Design? Or are you wanting to learn like html, css, JS, PHP or sql and code yourself?

That seems like an awfull lot of money. Their SQL Server Development is for 2005 and I think it is up to 2008 now. I think a better investment would be books, and I don't see anything there that would give you a good foundation in XHTML and CSS.
HTML is your foundation and it is important you have a good understanding of it.

Can you give us a little bit more feed back and maybe we can give you more detailed information.

As for your question on the CIW exams. I know several people that have the certs. However, they don't use them. Nor do you see alot of employers asking for them. I think you would do better to sink the money for those certs into yourself and tools to further your knowledge.
