The great thing about YouTube is that you can find gems like that Level 42 one - I have seen them live a couple of times but don't remember seeing them play the track I linked to. And yes they were great, well Mark King was anyway.

I have also seen The Who twice and although they are icons of their time, they never really rang my bell after Keith died :(

Interesting that Pete. Who was drumming for them when you saw them? The two times I've seen them they had Zak Starkey drumming. He's Ringo Starr's son and was taught to play by Mooney himself, and by Pete Townshend's own admission, he's as good as Mooney was. He just isn't as crazy.:D

The thing that strikes me with the Who, not just when I've seen them myself but in older footage as well, was that they gelled so well as musicians. They turn every other song into a jam session because each plays off the others so well. I've seen them do this to the point that Roger Daltrey was making up lyrics on the spot to the tunes the rest were banging out and it really is something to watch. It's funny that, in the old days at least, they didn't really get on that well off-stage.

I am not sure who the drummer was the second time but I am sure it wasn't Ringo's son Zak.

The first time I saw them was at Charlton in 1974 - here is a vid of the actual performance and Keith was on the drums, he died about 4 years later I think. You might catch a glimpse of me in the crowd, I am the young mod with the parker and the target on the back :p

You may recognise the song too :biggrin

    By the beard of Odin!!!!!!

Never realised there was such love for the best instrument known to man here

Been playing bass for 14 years now, still going strong too

The people you've been mentioning so far, Flea, Entwistle, Pastorius, all major influences of mine. However, how about the man credited as the inventor of slap bass, Larry Graham, of Graham Central Station fame.

Any funk fans will need this lad in their CD collections

No worries mate. He is not terribly well known, which I think is a crime. There's more links on YouTube of him playing 'Fly Away' with Lenny Kravitz and Prince. How can that be topped????

His albums are going for low prices on Amazon, well worth a look

You are absolutely right, I think this guy was created rather than conceived. I bought a few of his albums and sheet music to try and emulate it, I literally could not get to grips with most of it. I can pretty much play any style set in front of me but this man was something else.

Ha! Freddy, that guy was a riot! I thought I could pick out some of my Kata forms during his performance. I feared for the ladies near him! Hands of Fury!

Now, as far as bass players, I've loved all the links. Some comments:

    1. Paco -- imagine if he was clean?
    2. John Entwistle -- *the* most underrated.
    3. Cliff Burton -- would've been a decent guitar player

now, no mention of Victor Wooten?

or John Patitucci? He's better with Chick Corea's band.

or Bunny Brunell? He's played with everyone, as has the currently underrated Dave Larue. This guy can rock (and has) with anyone.

Oh, and don't forget the guys that don't stand on solos... like Geddy Lee and Chris Squire. Lastly, realize that the top talent in musicians (particularly bass) rarely get fame, outside of the studio -- since they spend all their time there!

Thanks for the links, it's amazing seeing clips of all these brilliant bassists! I just wish this stuff had been available when I was trying to learn - I got sucked into Dave Larue's lessons, man he makes it look so easy 8)

According to this link Paul Simon played that bass solo in "Call me Al" himself - can anyone verify that?

I am another bassist - started out on 6 string but after we got through so many bassists (and drummers) I got stuck with emergency bass duty for a gig and it stuck - hehe oh the momeries!
