I accept that many of them are excellent at using the applications they are familiar with. Adobe Photoshop etc. Macs (as you know) tend to be used for powerful graphical apps, pre-press stuff and other things which have always been their forte.

I am referring more to their understanding of the OS.

Yep seen that with mac users - the funny part is that that some of them have an attitude because they are using mac's and know the graphics packages backwards, but apart from that they dont have any real technical abilities....
