    Hm - OK

You will need to run that netsh command I gave earlier. It should clean up the service provider part of the software stack.

If that doesn't work then try the instructions at this site.

    OK still getting nowhere.
Thanks for taht link harry but its come too late. I did say at the start of this thread that this had all happened due to uninstalling Zone ALarm......
Even so i did follow those instructions looking for anything it might have left behind, but turned up nothing.

and that netsh command still doesent cure the ipconfig /renew error i get....

Looks liek fresh install of windows..im ready as i backed up everything lol ( i hope)

What I suspect is happening is that there is a service provider entry in the software stack for ZA, and the file it points to isn't there any more.

Without putting diags on the box it is difficult to guess what is happening.

Edit - have a try of this utility - I've heard some good things about it.

    Ok....

I think its time to kill this one (could go on fer ages with no resolution) so im goin to install XP over itself and see if that cures it. If not Then a fresh install from a format (could do with cleaning the drive anyway)

Thanks for the patience and help Harry!

Sorry to be really stupid and hijack this thread, but how the hell do you get that straight line in between the all and the more? It's on the keyboard, I just can't for the life of me figure out how to use it!

Depends on your keyboard. On many there are two different ones, and they aren't always equivalent.

On this keyboard there is one above the '\' to the left of the Z - simple shift key will do.

There is also one to the left of the '1' key - you need 'Alt Gr' to get that one.

Here the two are side-by-side - I hope this appears correctly on your system:

I have had to use this utility a couple of times now when boxes have refused to connect. Sometimes spyware removal tools can break the winsock too.

Good detective work and saved a lot of time re-installing for no reason. Nice work Harry!
