I was noodling around Amazon yesterday and ever curious about Linux, I happened to notice that SuSe 9.1 Pro was going for a pretty inexpensive price. I impulsively clicked a few links and bought it (about $15.00 american including tax and shipping). Then I noticed that SuSe 9.0 Pro was going for around 7 or 8 bucks. These are full, boxed editions...not just stripped down disks and no documentation.

Now that 9.1 is on its way, can anyone tell me what the difference is between 9.0 and 9.1? I went to the official SuSe site but couldn't find anything that would tell me.

i think its more or less the same as 9.0, but several of the features have been updated to newer versions. i.e. the version of GNOME and whassname have been updated to the newer versions. 9.1 uses the latest linux kernel. apart from that i think its more or less the same as 9.0, though im sure there will be a few new programs added, as is usual in an OS upgrade.

Fergal! There is life at certforums! I was beginning to dispair. Thanks for responding. I've been trying to decide if buying 9.0 would have been an ok move. Probably it would have been but I guess it doesn't hurt to have 9.1. By the time I get around to implementing it, successive versions will be out anyway. Thanks.

Hi Trip, grab the 9.1 version. The main points are that a few bugs have been ironed out, it has the updated 2.6 kernal instead of the 2.2 version and samba is now the 3.0 version instead of ~2.4.

As usual tiny little things have changed but I think these are the main points.

That is very true. I'm going to do this as soon as I have the chance. It seems there are major problems with the samba. I tried for 2 weeks to set up the samba and filesharing so I could retrieve stuff from my backups. Could I do it? No way, even after 2 weeks, so I put on Win2K3 server and 1.5 hours later no more problems.

I still think SuSE is a great distro but it seemed to run slower than Win2K3. Still, I will put it back on one day.
