I read a lot of negative things about getting into the IT industry, how to achieve a dream job and all I can say is aim high, work hard and keep your eyes open for opportunity – most importantly look for ways you can do a job, sell your strong points and work on your weak points.

This led me to a job in Pre-Sales Engineering and I want to share with you my career progression in the last four years (with salary as I’m sure you would agree, although not the main focal point is a bloody good incentive to work harder).

    Service desk operative – 11 months – 16k
    In house support engineer – 18k – 6 months
Outsourced IT Support Engineer – 21k – 2 years (pay rise to 25k after the first year)
    Pre-Sales Engineer – Current 40k Basic + 20k commission average

All achievable with only an A+ and MCDST in my pocket.

I have managed to achieve this by always delivering what I have promised. Working 60+ some weeks to show willingness and gain experience.
Never saying no to an opportunity when I see it, having courage that I can be where I want to be if I believe in myself.

I technically sell monitoring solutions for IT infrastructure’s of all sizes in all business sectors. I get to play with the newest technology all the time as we have to test and demonstrate how our solutions can meet the needs of prospective clients. Just to clear this up, I am not a sales demo monkey (I would rather be dead), I am heavily involved in the development of our software and how it integrates into live company networks.
There are some fantastic jobs out there and they are there for the taking – don’t be average, tailor your CV’s to each job you apply for (don’t bulk apply) and go for each job like it has your name (CV) written all over it.

Pre-Sales is a great industry to be in and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a challenge, meeting people and travelling. It’s very hard but very rewarding.

I hope this raises the spirit of things in this ever depressing economy, don’t think like the rest - Embrace Change!

    Have a great day! :D
