LOL. Oh how true that is, Sparky. It's like any other occupation where you provide services that are relied upon to make money, for shelter, for food stuffs, etc.... It's do the work that has to be done to keep things running, and the hours simply don't factor into the equation. If the main router, critical servers, etc... go down, or there is a compromise of the network, the company just doesn't make money until things are fixed, so it's work until everything is done. On top of that IT isn't seen as a money-maker. IT is seen more as a necessary evil to reach business goals, so IT is chronically under-funded, and under-manned, in most cases.

I don't mind long hours as long as the start time every day is the same, unlike next week when my start times are all over the place.

During my job interview today, the guy asked me that after all of the flexible hours I work writing books and such, could I adjust to the "8 to 5 grind". I had to assure him that I always have a "day job" so it's not a grind (the grind part is spending evenings and weekends writing books and articles).

Amen to that! Or, said differently, QFT. I don't look forward to doing that again...

    9-5 in IT?

    Nah.

I've just got home from a 'shift' and I only work 1st line!

Okay granted, I was setting up and supporting a presentation... and the presentation was in a club/pub... and the drinks were free... but you gotta take the rough with the smooth!!

But in all honesty Wiz, I personally think you have to do the graft before they even show you where the map to easy street is.

If you want 9-5, get a job in administration. If you love IT, take what they give you. You know, lie back, think of England, that kind of thing!! No no really, from someone starting at the bottom of the run too, it's not all that bad. The perks of my IT first line job far outweigh any little negatives that encroach on my life. I'm having a blast.

Let us know how you keep getting on, on the job front. You coming to the meet next month or at Christmas? I don't mind standing you a couple of drinks, to get your company there :)

I am currently looking at a job away from computers and phones for a while, the job I'm applying for is for between 4-6 months and it pays the same as NHS direct without the shift patterns and weekend working.

Just waiting for the application form to arrive. I'll probably coming to the Christmas one, fingers crossed and thanks for the drinks offer 8)
