I started IE6 but the page stopped loading, the screen froze, then five seconds later, gone :!:

I've been trying for a while, but no luck.

Decided to go to Help and Support, but when it was scanning for updates, it shut down, back to the desktop.

I can use outlook express, and I've received mail.

Anyway, I'm thought I'd go to my Virtual XP machine, which is what I'm on now, and obviously this is ok.

    What's wrong :huh

Do you get any error messages at all ? Have you checked the event logs ?

Just thought about changing my home site from www.tiscali.co.uk to www.certforums.co.uk.
    It works fine, then.

If I try to go to the tiscali site from here, it freezes, then shuts down.

Look like it's a problem with my ISP.

Windows update must be affected by my ISP's problems, but other websites obviously aren't.

I'll have a look at the event logs now Phil.

    Thanks.

    :hhhmmm , strange :!:

Just went back to the host machine.Tiscali site still freezes, on startup of IE, or browsing to it from another site.

When I browse to it, or start it as my home page, from here (my VM machine), it's ok.

Tiscali is also showing that there's no probs in their status bar.

So, looks like it is my problem.

I checked the event viewer but the only red error has occured before on previous days. It's a VM error about insufficient memory.Probably trying to open too many machines.

    Any ideas.

Flex - you want the answer in a nutshell ?

Tiscali are cr@p at the moment, and have been for a month or two now.

As you (may) know, I'm with them too, and have meaning to ask you for a while if you've been having probs with them.

I get kicked off at least once a day, usually more - and it usually happens just as I have finished writing a lengthy post here, JUST before it submits

Tiscali's billing saga was dispicable and put me off them for life.

However, they seem to be ok recently and I never have any problems this past month.

    Maybe it's affecting certain areas.

I'll probably change from tiscali when the current contract runs out though.

They have surprised me at how smoothly the service has run these past few months actually, but still I'll probably try somewhere else before long.

Don't think this problem is tiscali's fault though, because I can get to tiscali site through VM, just not on my host, main machine.

    I'll keep trying.

    Thanks :!:

So the moral of this story boys and girls is that this turned out to not be a security or virus issue, but an "ISP is crud" issue. Sounds like it's time for a change, flex.

Still not sure about this Tripwire, it's not sorted yet.

If I can get to the ISP through VMWare, with no problems, then it must be my host.

    Don't know :scratch

One reboot, and all is well.

Must have been something on the original startup.

Can't think what, nothing stands out in the event logs.

One for the X files I think :alien
