Oh I'm sure they are very good. Mine is metal with a big screen, looks cool. The image we use in work is so bloated, partly rightly so although I'd strip a bit out if I had any influence

We use McAfee at work and have looked at the likes of Trend Micro Deep Security, in a commercial enterprise I expect enterprise level class software but at home I don't mind using the freebies (as mentioned Avast). I have used ESET in the past and it was ok, I have also used Symantec which again has it's place.

Same here. Enterprise level a good management console is a must, I do have a fondness for ePO, but at home, anything will do, don't waste your money if you're a sensible browser

Filter drivers are often part of rootkits so id check out your system with a tooth comb personally.

Drive by downloads, infected PDF's, lots of ways to get compromised without downloading warez.

I think an often overlooked "antivirus" tool is a good ad-blocker. The amount of times I've fixed a friends PC because they have downloaded some malware by clicking on some weird advertisement. Often they have clicked the wrong download button (an advert) for legitimate software, which has taken them down a long and windy road of installing crapware programs.

The standard for me is Adblock Plus and Avast. I feel Adblock Plus is more of a prevention tool instead of a cure, and I believe it provides excellent additional protection for the average user.
