Even the higher-classification clearances can be obtained without a sparkling clean record. One of my friends smoked pot when she was in high school. She applied for an Army Intel position (similar to what I did) and came clean with them about her past use. She told him truthfully that it was in the past and wasn't happening currently. From what I understand, her clearance was granted. Had she tried to cover it up, I doubt she would have gotten the clearance.

My TS clearance took an amazingly short 37 days... but I was 19, and had lived in the same city all my life (the same house since I was 5), and other than a bunch of speeding tickets, had a clean record.
