Glad it is sorted mate, best to go for WPA for the encryption.

Are you still having issues with the router though? :blink

Ahh wait I have just worked it out you have to setup the ISP username and password on all the PC's on the network! Is that right??

You can't use the router as a hub to provide one login for all the PC's on the network??

OK can someone explain this if N+ is 300 metres signal is that only out going signal length or both ways?
If you have laptop that is 250 metres away form the router although the router can transmit the distance is there a limit on the wireless card on the laptop ?? it's on g network?

I havent used the Belkin unit however I think this is unlikely.

Basically you should have a username and password to log into the router (to configure it) and within there you can then configure the ADSL settings, you would use the username and password from your ISP for this.

Then anyone should be able to patch into the router, get an IP and and get on the tinternet! :biggrin

O.K UCM back to the start. Forget about the internal LAN for now mate. When you recieved your internet connection (however long ago), you will have recieved written files containing certain information. This is the information you need to enter into the "internet WAN" page of the madem/router. Once this is done properly you ahould have a connection to the internet. If needs be, go to your ISP's website and find details regarding the setup of modem/routers (they normaly have such info). You do not have to enter any of these details into the pc's (of course, you will use your pc to connect to the admin page of the router/modem). The only time you have to configure the PC,s is to setup a workgroup, but leave all this untill you have an internet connection through the router.

Can you give the name and model number of the router/modem so I can try and download the manual. also the name of your ISP may help.

None taken mate, I have enabled the firewall and set up wpa settings on the wifi but I am surprised to see how many wireless networks the laptop antenna picks up. There's 5 networks and 3 of them show no security:dry

Dont be tempted mate. Chances are they wouldnt know you were using their bandwidth, but its not worth the risk. Any luck with the WAN settings??

*All* machines should be set to detect IP settings. *Don't* try and set static IPs.
Huh? You won't see an Internet connection as an icon - it should just happen!
Can we get the basics straight first? :biggrin

That is because the speed of the Ethernet is 100Mbps. Nothing to do with the WAN. If you want to know the WAN speed then look at the router info page.

No! What are you trying to do now? :biggrin
This is how it is supposed to work!
I'd be surprised if you got much over 30Mbps in your situation.

The ISP sets the speed. Look at the main router page - this shows both up and down speeds.

Even though you have a 8MB you wont get anywhere near that, the joy of ADSL!

This is handy tool to test the connection...

Thanks spearky although there's seems to be a problem with the site I get this message:-

    Test Error

The system is currently busy. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.

I guess there must be a lot of people out there testing there connection!?:biggrin
