Is Eclipse *your* ISP or his?

Is *your* ISP via LLU or not?

If not then try the username [email protected]in with no password. It *should* at least connect - but only give access to BT test pages rather than the Internet.

There should be a WAN stats page - what does it show for the connection details?

Leave it alone - it will sort itself out when the connection happens.

Any screenshot of your local LAN settings will be largly useless to 'hackers' as you are behind a NAT router.

But I seriously doubt that your local LAN is the problem here.

OK. You will still need to use *your* account info while at your house if you are on different packages and the wholesale provider is BT.

Thanks harry, OK I am at work at the mo but will try that tonight,:biggrin err :blink I just wondering do I really need to be hard wired conneted to the net to gain access to the web portal on the router or can I connect to the web server inside the router through IE without going through the internet?

Also is the gateway defined automatically or do you have to assign this myself!:blink

You can nearly always access the setup pages on routers without the router being connected to the Internet. Obviously you can't check the username and password is right without the Internet!
Your connection from the access box must, of course, be on the LAN local to that router. I'd advise not trying this via WiFi connection, this just adds complications! Use Ethernet.

The gateway entry should be automatic, along with the IP for the router and the DNS entries. This is all sent from the ISP.

Sorry Harry, got to dissagree here. Unless you set up the router to recieve its IP and DNS info from the ISP (through dhcp) then it may not be able to access the Internet. Of course, it must first access the ISP for this information anyway. :D

Nearly every domestic router sold on the UK market these days is set to get IP, gateway and DNS automaticaly via PPP (not DHCP). This is to reduce the volume of support calls!

Early routers did indeed not have this set like this, and you had to manualy enter these details from a sheet supplied by the ISP. Fortunately this has been improved!

O.K. Just one question. I thought PPP was used on dial-up links to an ISP (I thought it was a low layer "connection" protocol)?

PPP is a Point to Point Protocol, and is used as a layer 2 protocol whenever such a situation (i.e. point-to-point) arises. So as well as being used for dial it is used for DSL. Many here will have heard of PPPoA. This is the 'shim' that sits below PPP and allows PPP to use ATM, which is the bottom layer in the DSL stack.

PPP has many capabilites, among which is being able to support many layer 3 protocols simultaneously, e.g you could have IP, IPX and appletalk all running together happily.

OK thanks for all the help and advice I manged to connect to the network!

The problem was I should of ditched the CD setup program and gone through the web interface on the router. For some reason the username and password setting were not being saved through the CD setup. I am now conecting whooo hooo!!!:biggrin

OH and also I didn't realise you had to set the LAN settings up in internet exployer to automatically detect?

But I've got another problem I can see a connection on the laptop and but can not connect to the internet only to the router?

Also is it better /safer to set the wirless security to WPA-PSK if you haven't got a home server? or should I use the following options:-

    128bit wep,
    64bit wep
    WPA
