Thats similiar, if not the same thing as ping -t *insert ip address*. when someone constantly pings your machine shite loads of times to get access to your computer

No - don't try advanced stuff before you get the basics working.

Yes and no. The point of the DNS info is so the network behind the router can look up machine names. However, this makes no difference to being able to connect, or to using IP addressing for pings and traceroutes.

Hence my comment about it being of lesser importance.

Don't try to mess with the firewall before you have this thing connected. You will only make life more difficult for yourself!

In many cases the default PC firewall will be perfectly adequate while you get the basics sorted.

The two are not the same.

Both settings can be set from the ISP.

I'm off to bed anyway mate. Good luck (even though I think you have cracked it now. One more thing, If any of the machines on his network is Win98 then it wont support WPA so you will need to download some software, but I'll give you the info in the morning. Let us know how it went!! :D

Yes, I know. Its just the way it is worded lead me to believe it should have said IP. Most of the time routers lump DNS and IP options into one, so you only have to tick one box to get all the info. :D

No i dont... I did have one some time ago, but took it down as i rarely used it, and the main reason for using it was to try and "hack" my network...

I'm all hard-wired now baby... pc's, laptop, xbox

Is there a setup wizard for this device? That usually auto detects the ADSL settings. If not what ISP are you using mate?

Try to focus on the basics for just now, that’s getting the router connected to the internet. After that you can play around with some of the more advanced features of the router.

Some routers pass the LAN IP of the router out to the clients connected to it and the router acts as a forwarder. Others pass the DNS IPs of your ISP through to the clients as part of the DHCP scope. In this case I would enable the setting to pass through the ISPs DNS IPs.

Is there an event log for the router? From what you have told us and the troubleshooting you have done there are a few potential areas that could be casing the problem.

*username and password are wrong (you may need @btconnect.com, or whatever, in the username)
*ADSL settings are wrong, try the setup wizard or post your ISP and we can find out what they are.
*DNS, you said this is blank so the PC won’t have any DNS to resolve websites etc. This looks to be related to the other points I posted as this should be populated automatically when you establish the connection to your ISP

OK I still can't get connected through the setup , the message shown is "internet account information not accepted"

Which is weird because I have eb=ven cut and paste it from the site into the setup boxes!!:ohmy

If it wasn't my mates router i would be testing out my shot putting skills with it right now!!:p:biggrin You should see how far I can throw a 17" CRT.

    OK here are the steps,

    1) connect the PC through Lan port RJ45 to back of router
    2) connect the Router RJ11 to ADSL filter with RJ11 Connection
    3) Switch on the router and wait for setup.
    4) run CD/setup and follow instructions

After this bit it asks for the internet provider, well it's not on the list it's a BT phone line but Eclipse internet provider. So I chose PPPoA settings enter the VPI/VCI and enter username and password.

    UCM,

Can I suggest you go and sleep and tackle the problem with a fresh mind tomorrow. I used to do that and my brain got fried a few times and ended up making mistakes that made the problem worse 8)
