The ISP will tell the router/modem, which in turn will tell your PC.

Im a bit confused regarding your setup. It should be.

1.Bin the USB modem. This is not used.

    PC-----Router/Modem(combined)--------Filter-------Wall Telephone socket.

The router HAS a modem inside so no need for the USB modem.

Im sorry if you already know this, no disrespect meant. The filter is simply so your telephones are not interfered with.

When setting the router up USE WIRED PORT on the router and connect an ethernet cable to one of the PC's (worry about the wireless later). :D

I know.. Iknow!! that's what I thought bin the USB Modem but the modem inside the router can't connect to the internet. I decide rather than runing up and down the street to mate mates house to connect it through my network and I get the sam problem. No packets recieved through the Belkin Router/modem. I have checked the settings on the ISP website and the USB modem and can't under stand why it doesn't connect!?:blink

To reiterate. Some routers require a WIRED LINK to get into the admin page.

what the screen shot shows is your network side. I think the trouble you are having is with the WAN side

Select the 'Internet WAN' menu and look there.

You will need to put in *your* connection details if you are at home, rather than his. There is no guarrantee that settings can be migrated to another line. Sometimes it works, but frequently it doesn't.

I have to say that either this has been messed up - or something is not right with the router. My experience with stuff sold in the UK for *normal* ISPs is that you only need to insert the username and password and it will just work! The CDs usualy packaged with the unit make this easy.

Change the DNS. You will NOT be able to use HIS ISP details mate. You have to put yours in. That should be it then!!

of course, getting the wirless working is another thing.

Well - it's not connecting - so it can't get the DNS details.

But DNS is a minor consideration - the inportant things is getting it to connect.

Er - context? I think it unlikely that the Ping of death would appear on a router settings page!
