If I were going to write a thank you letter, I'd write it after I was turned down, thanking the person for their time and ask where you could improve for future interviews.

What's the point in writing one if you are offered the position?

There are 3 different types of letters you can write depending on the sitution:

    1. After the interview is over - A letter to thank the interviewer
for their time and consideration, and emphasise again why
you would be the best candidate for the job.

    2. If you are offered the job - A letter to thank the company for
the offer and to negotiate the salary and benefits if you need
    to.

    3. If you dont get the job - A letter to thank the interviewer
and ask for some interview feedback in more detail.

Haven't heard anything from the company I interviewed with yet and the interview was on Tuesday.

How long does it normally take before you hear back from a company according to everyones experience?

Also, how do most companies get in touch with you if you have been successfull/unsuccessful? Is it by email or phone or by letter?

    Thanks 8)

    UK,

This is the worst part! It all depends on how soon they want their new recruit onboard.
As for comm's it all depends on the company. PLC/Government would put the offer in writing.

I know, I really want this job, its frustrating not knowing if I got it or not. I was in the final 2 so its 50/50!

The company is a PLC. Are you saying they wont contact me by phone/email first? They will just write to me?

A PLC would e-mail or send a letter in the post (or both). They might even sub the HR side out to a company who seek and interview all the candidates, so don't be supprised if it takes a while.

    Fingers crossed! :thumbleft

It can go either way. I went for an interview at a school once and they'd left a message with my gf offering me the job before I'd even got home. Other times, it's taken nearly a month to hear something (whilst still being successful). I would give it two weeks and then phone just to ask if they've sent out any letters yet.

Well, the interviewer said he would let me know by Friday, and I haven't heard anything yet.
I emailed the HR girl who contacted me about the position, but I got an auto reply email saying she was in meetings all day and will be back on Monday.

Hopefully I'll know on Monday 8)
