Hey guys, is it possible to use (or hack) windows desktop search to use the search index from a server? I'm sure that I read a while ago that it was but I cant find the links anymore. I'm looking to get our users to be able to search the server data (on the cheap) without using google enterprise search (which actually sounds quite good).

Would Microsoft Search Server Express not work for you? I haven't used it myself so I don't know the product but a quick search lists the following connectors.

Thanks Simon. It looks good but it seems to need a full SQL server to run. Is it also free? I know it's a "free download" which doesn't equate to the same thing.

According to this page you can use SQL Server Express which will store 300,000 entries, with full SQL Server you get 10 million entries.

Do you install it on SharePoint box or as a stand-alone server?

RAM requirements are quite harsh (8GB production single server, 16GB multi-server)

    WIP: Uhmm... not sure

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately we have ~450,000 items on the server so the express edition is out of the question for us.
