    Hey all,

Me and the IT Technical Manager are currently planning a roll out of the above to replace our old MOM05 platform. I've already built a few 2008 R2 PE2850s, set up iSCSI, installed SQL Server 2008 and set up the instances (Operations DB, Data Warehouse), plus have alloted some space on the SAN for archiving of old DW data and now it's time to configure the roles & action accounts. *sigh*

So my question is this - Does anyone have any experience using SCOM07 or use it in their business?

I can't believe I now need to read up on all of this plus study for the 297 simultaneously. I swear my brain is going to explode soon. Ah well, all this exposure to 2008R2 can't be bad for the MCITP:SA I guess...

    All comments appreciated.

    Ta,

I installed OpsMgr over 2 years ago. Easy to setup, very difficult to master. You'll kick yourself for every false positive it generates until you learn the ropes.

Installing it is easy, configuring Rules and Alerts however is a royal pain. This is certainly not a install and forget product.

How big an estate are you planning on rolling this out to, what will you be monitoring?

A couple of things to watch out for with SCOM (and it is R2 isn't it?), there were a few requirements that we needed to install on our servers before we could install the agent (hotfixes etc), the machines also required restarts.

As far as VMM goes, are you a ESX\vSphere or HyperV? If you're VMware you will still need to install the VC server and piggy back off the back of it with VMM.

It's definitely worth getting the System Center Operations Manager 2007 Unleashed (published by SAMS) book, it's a great reference book although it is getting a little old now (no R2 coverage).

Probably 200-300 machines at the start, including VMs. It's more being implemented due to an expansion project due April.

Yep, it is R2. Do you have a list of the most recent prerequisites? This may be helpful to know.

Hyper-V all the way. Got a couple of beefy Dell boxes running 2008 R2 enterprise, with multiple file/print servers on each, which will be the first port of call.

Thanks for the reference, muchly appreciated.

    +rep for you Simon :)
